Purpose of the Role

The Graduate Geoenvironmental Engineer will support geotechnical and geoenvironmental projects, developing technical competence through supervised work on contaminated land assessments, ground investigations, and geotechnical design. The role provides a structured pathway toward professional chartership and offers exposure to a wide variety of project types.

Key Responsibilities

1. Field Work & Site Supervision

Supervise ground investigations across the UK, including trial pits and borehole drilling

Log soil and rock samples to British Standards

Carry out infiltration testing, soakaway assessments, ground gas monitoring and groundwater sampling

Collect soil and water samples in line with relevant standards

Undertake in‑situ testing such as SPT, C , PLT and TRL‑DCP

Set out investigation locations using GPS equipment

Conduct site walkovers and reconnaissance surveys

Prepare and review risk assessments and method statements

Liaise with contractors, clients and site personnel

Ensure compliance with CDM regulations and company health and safety procedures

2. Contaminated Land Assessment

Prepare Phase 1 Desk Studies and develop Conceptual Site Models

Design Phase 2 intrusive investigations based on risk assessment needs

Interpret chemical and geotechnical laboratory data

Undertake Generic Quantitative Risk Assessments

Complete contaminated land assessments in line with LCRM, BS10175 and client requirements

Assess pollutant linkages and risks to human health and controlled waters

Evaluate soil suitability for reuse and prepare Materials Management Plans

Recommend remediation strategies and prepare verification reports

3. Geotechnical Engineering

Support infiltration assessments for SuDS design

Interpret ground investigation data including logs, test results and trial pit records

Prepare geotechnical desk studies and interpretive reports

Provide foundation design recommendations in accordance with Eurocodes

Assess bearing capacity, settlement and ground improvement requirements

Evaluate slope stability and retaining wall parameters

Provide earthworks and pavement design recommendations

Assess ground‑related hazards such as mining legacy and subsidence

4. Hydrology & Drainage Support

Assist with drainage strategies and SuDS design

Undertake desktop reviews of soils, geology and borehole records

Carry out soakaway testing

Support hydrological risk assessments and flood studies

Contribute to drainage calculations using appropriate parameters

5. Technical Reporting & Communication

Produce factual and interpretive reports to internal quality standards

Prepare drawings, cross‑sections and plans using CAD

Write clear, concise technical reports for clients, regulators and planning authorities

Contribute to Environmental Impact Assessments and planning submissions

Maintain accurate project records and ensure all deliverables undergo technical review

6. Technical Software & Systems

Use specialist software such as Open ground, GEO5, PDISP and risk assessment tools

Maintain proficiency in Microsoft Office

Complete timesheets and administrative tasks through company systems
