Hazardous Materials Defence Engineer – Salary up to £45,000 per annum –

We’re growing our Materials Performance team to support some of the UK’s most important defence programmes. This role is designed for an early‑stage professional wishing to develop hazardous materials expertise, take on meaningful projects, and accelerate career growth within a highly regulated engineering environment.
ResponsibilitiesWhat you’ll work on
- Materials regulations & compliance: learn how REACH, RoHS and similar regulations apply in real engineering projects.
- Hazardous materials management: understand how materials are controlled safely across an asset’s lifecycle.
- Materials assurance activities: help assess compliance with regulations, client policies, and internal standards.
- Environmental and safety considerations: support decisions that protect people and the environment.
- Technical evidence: contribute to clear, well‑structured documentation that justifies engineering decisions.
What you’ll be doing day‑to‑day
- Support technical work on materials compliance and assurance tasks, learning to approach problems in a structured, evidence‑led way.
- Assist in developing and reviewing compliance processes and documentation.
- Contribute to project work, supporting delivery against scope, quality, and timelines.
- Help gather and interpret information for materials‑related assessments.
- Build familiarity with relevant legislation and its practical implications.
- Work closely with experienced engineers who will guide your development.
- Contribute to technical reports that are clear, accurate, and auditable.
- Some experience (industry, placement, or postgraduate work) in a relevant field.
- A degree in materials science, chemistry, engineering, or a similar discipline.
- An interest in materials compliance, safety, or environmental impact.
- Clear communication skills – you can explain your thinking and write in a structured way.
- A careful, detail‑oriented approach suited to regulated environments.
Nice‑to‑haves (not required)
- Any exposure to the defence industry.
- Awareness of REACH, RoHS, or similar regulations.
- Experience with materials testing, lab work, or technical analysis.
- A postgraduate qualification or further study related to the field.
This role is designed to help you grow quickly and build a strong technical foundation. You’ll be supported through day‑to‑day learning on live projects, mentoring from experienced consultants, exposure to materials compliance and regulation, and gradual increases in responsibility and independence. A clear progression path to subject matter expert is provided as your confidence and capability develop.
Due to the nature of the work Frazer‑Nash undertakes, candidates will be required to undergo pre‑employment screening and must be able to satisfy clearance criteria for UK National Security Vetting.
