The Cellular Pathology Department at Southmead Hospital is a well equipped, accredited by UKAS to ISO) and approved by IBMS for training. With a workload of approximately 80,000 requests per year, we provide a comprehensive service (Histopathology, Cytopathology and Immunohistochemistry) to the two acute Trusts in Bristol, local GPs and other centres in the south west. The work is varied, covering all specialisms with the exception of Neuropathology.
Applicants with appropriate academic requirements for HCPC registration (i.e. BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science or equivalent with accredited top-up modules) are invited to apply for this Trainee Biomedical Scientist position.
You will need to be an enthusiastic, adaptable individual, passionate about working in healthcare, and enjoy working as part of a friendly team, providing the Histology service in this busy department.
Upon successful completion of the IBMS registration portfolio, competency training and registration with the HCPC the successful applicant will progress to a Band 5.

Main duties of the job- This is a training post in which the post-holder will be expected to complete a course of training to become registered with the HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist. The training will be delivered in all aspects of Cellular Pathology and may require the post-holder to spend time working in other laboratories within North Bristol Trust or elsewhere. In order to achieve the requisite level of knowledge some structured study will need to be done in the trainee's own time.
- Under the direction and supervision of qualified staff assist in the provision of routine and specialist diagnostic laboratory service in accordance with national and professional standards
- To work on a rotational basis in all sections of the laboratory
- Work on a rotational basis at our Essential Services Laboratory (ESL) based at the BRI.
- With senior staff participate in the training and development of junior staff within the department
The Histopathology department has a strong team working culture, always looking to improve to enhance not only the service we provide our users, but also the experiences we offer our team. Part of this development includes the implementation of digital pathology with the aim of digitising all slides produced in the lab. Being a large department you will gain knowledge and experience across a wide range of activities and specimens.
