Job Overview
We have a 6 month secondment opportunity for a Senior Biomedical Scientist in Immunochemistry, Autoimmunity and Allergy.
Applications are invited from enthusiastic, experienced and motivated HCPC registered biomedical scientists to work in our department within the grounds of Southmead Hospital. The laboratory is housed in a modern, purpose‑built laboratory and the successful candidate will be joining a busy but friendly team.
The Immunology department at North Bristol NHS Trust provides a diagnostic service for the local community serving a population of approximately 500,000 and a referral service throughout the Southwest. The laboratory is split into four sections:
Autoimmunity and Allergy, Immunochemistry, Immunophenotyping and Tissue Typing. The successful candidate will rotate between all of the sections.
We are looking for a team player with excellent computer, administrative, practical and communication skills to assist and supervise the day‑to‑day work of the laboratory.
DetailedJob Description And Main Responsibilities The Successful Candidate Will
- Perform routine and specialist laboratory testing within the Immunology and Immunogenetics laboratory, providing diagnostic testing for NBT and other health care organisations.
- In collaboration with the laboratory leads and managers, manage and co‑ordinate activities in the autoimmunity and immunochemistry sections within Immunology.
- With other senior staff, participate in the supervision, training and development of staff in the department.
- With the Laboratory Manager, contribute to the development of the services provided to meet user requirements.
To be responsible for the day‑to‑day organisation and management of the work and staff in the autoimmunity/immunochemistry sections of the department in liaison with the other section managers.
- Interpret routine and specialist diagnostic test results; technically validate routine and specialist test results; authorise routine and specialist test results.
- Telephone important results to an appropriate person which may be out of routine hours.
- Maintain a high level of professional competence in the performance of all tests and the investigations carried out in the section.
- Contribute to discussions of workflow patterns and methodology.
- Ensure the efficient and safe use of consumables and equipment within the working area.
- Be responsible for the day‑to‑day maintenance and cleanliness of laboratory equipment.
- Ensure participation in quality assurance procedures in accordance with the laboratory quality policies and UKAS requirements contributing to ISO
15189 standards. - Participate in all aspects of the technical work of Immunology and Immunogenetics as appropriate.
- Provide appropriate cover for other Band7’s and more senior BMS staff as required.
- Be responsible for resource management within their section, ensuring adequate supplies of equipment, materials and reagents, prioritising work and troubleshooting problems that occur.
- Participate in evaluation of new methods and equipment.
- Participate in internal and external quality control procedures.
- Ensure that all risk management processes, including error reporting, within section comply with departmental and trust policies.
- Organise and participate in audit.
- Organise and participate in research and the development and introduction of new techniques and systems of work.
- Be involved in the investigation and response to complaints escalating to the Lead Healthcare Scientist as appropriate.
- Notify Lead Health Care Scientist of all problems encountered in the performance of duties.
- Work according to laboratory procedures developed for use in the department. Ensure procedures in use within their area remain contemporary and relevant. Assist in the development and review of those procedures as required.
- Work according to the regulations and codes of practice governing aspects of Health and Safety relevant to the department.

- Participate and conduct staff appraisals according to trust policies and procedures.
