Biomedical Scientist – Haematology and Blood Transfusion (Band
5)

As a Biomedical Scientist you will be trained in all areas of Haematology Automation, Coagulation, Haemoglobinopathy and Blood Transfusion. The department is housed in a modern, purpose‑built laboratory and the successful candidate will be joining a busy but friendly team. Haematology uses the Beckman Coulter DxH
900‑2S with Cellavision Digital Morphology, Werfen ACL TOPS 750 Coagulation analysers, Benson’s Viscometers for Plasma Viscosity, Sebia Capillarys 3 for HbA1c and Haemoglobinopathy Screening. We also provide Antenatal and Newborn Screening services for Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia. The Blood Transfusion laboratory uses the Werfen Neo Iris Blood Grouping analysers.

The Blood Sciences department has a fully tracked Beckman Coulter DxA
5000 automated system connecting Haematology, Coagulation, Chemistry and Virology analysers. We have accreditation by UKAS under ISO:15189 and are assessed for compliance by MHRA. We are approved by the IBMS as a training laboratory for both the registration portfolio, leading to HCPC registration, and specialist portfolios.

Main Duties
  • Work as part of a team to provide a diagnostic laboratory service in Haematology and Blood Transfusion in accordance with National, Trust and Departmental policies and procedures on a rotational basis in all sections (Automation and Special Haematology and Blood Transfusion) of the laboratory.
  • Participate in the training and development of other staff within the department.
  • Participate fully in the department’s 24/7 rota system.
  • Contribute to the development of services provided to meet the requirements of users.
Detailed Responsibilities
  • Work in accordance with the Departmental Standard Operating Procedures and assist in the development and review of these as required.
  • Receive and analyse samples submitted to the department in accordance with laboratory policies and protocols.
  • Assist in the interpretation and technical validation of the analyses in accordance with laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Be responsible for the performance of compatibility testing and the issue of Blood and Blood Products to patients in routine and emergency situations.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the Hospital Blood Banks and the stock control of Blood & Blood Products.
  • Rotate into any area of the department as required.
  • Participate fully in the department’s 24/7 rota service.
  • Prioritise the completion of urgent requests.
  • Telephone/email important results to an appropriate person when necessary.
  • Be responsible for their own work under the supervision of senior laboratory staff.
  • Validate and release results to service users as required.
  • Maintain a high level of professional competence in the performance of all tests and investigations carried out in the department as appropriate.
  • Prepare and ensure adequate supplies of reagents and consumables.
  • Use consumables and equipment efficiently and safely in accordance with Health & Safety policies.
  • Perform the routine maintenance and cleaning of the equipment with which she/he is working, including maintenance records and recording of corrective actions.
  • Process internal and external quality control samples as required.
  • Participate in quality assurance procedures in accordance with the laboratory quality manual.
  • Participate in risk management of the department, including the reporting of adverse incidents.
  • Assist in research and development projects as required.
  • Assist in the training and teaching of trainee biomedical scientists, new BMS staff, MLA’s, medical staff and other healthcare professionals as required.
  • Participate in staff appraisal according to Trust policies and procedures.
  • Undertake continued professional development.
  • Be personally responsible for maintaining HCPC Registration.
  • Participate in all other activities in the section to enable the department to maintain compliance with ISO 15189.
Person Specification Education/Knowledge
  • HCPC registration – essential.
  • BSc honours degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent – essential.
