Job Overview

Avon Breast Screening is the largest breast screening programme in the South West, inviting over 60,000 women each year. It is one of the National Health Service Breast Screening Programmes (NHSBSP), aiming to save lives through early detection of breast cancer. Approximately 5% of women who undergo routine screening are recalled for a further assessment and just under 1% progress to treatment.

The role of Patient Pathway Coordinator oversees the breast screening aspects of the patient pathway, working closely with Consultant Radiologists and Breast Cancer Nurse Specialists and coordinating care with partner hospitals.

Duties
  • Typing correspondence from Consultant Radiologists to GPs, patients, and surgeons regarding appointments, referrals, and treatment decisions.
  • Managing the flow of complex patient information pre‑ and post‑weekly Multi‑disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings.
  • Preparing the Avon Breast Screening MDT spreadsheet each week and ensuring accurate data entry into the National Breast Screening Service (NBSS) system.
  • Liaising with partner organisations to facilitate the treatment of patients and ensuring all demographic and waiting‑list information is recorded.
  • Providing comprehensive secretarial support to Consultant Radiologists, including typing routine result letters from audio transcription.
  • Scheduling surgery appointments for patients following diagnosis, coordinating with medical secretaries.
  • Serving all Breast Screening Programme meetings: booking rooms, circulating agendas, taking notes, and compiling action items.
  • Handling telephone enquiries from patients, GPs, and staff in a polite and helpful manner.
  • Maintaining patient confidentiality and adhering to Trust policies such as Infection Control, Hygiene Code, and the Data Protection Act.
  • Providing training and support to newly appointed admin staff and undertaking additional administrative tasks as required.
  • Participating in policy changes within the Avon Breast Screening Department and managing own workload effectively.
  • Providing general admin cover during periods of planned annual leave and sickness.
Person Specification Qualifications
  • Educated to GCSE/A level standard (including English and Maths) or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office packages, including Outlook, Excel and Word.
  • Advanced keyboard and computer skills, including touch/audio typing (desirable).
Experience
  • Confident communication with a broad range of individuals, including patients and service users.
  • Attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Experience working to protocols and procedures, routine and non‑routine.
  • Experience of working in the NHS or a similar organisation.
  • Understanding of diagnostic and RTT pathways (desirable).
  • Knowledge and understanding of medical terminology (desirable).
