Job

Overview

We are inviting applicants for a training post to become an Advanced Practice Midwife. This is an exciting and challenging development opportunity designed for midwives who are ready to advance their scope of practice whilst continuing to work within their current clinical role. The programme is aligned to the four pillars of Advanced Practice:
Clinical Practice, Leadership & Management, Education, and Research.

Responsibilities

This training role is intentionally rigorous. The MSc Advanced Clinical Practice programme requires a high level of professional maturity, strong clinical foundations, and the ability to balance academic study with complex clinical responsibilities. Applicants should already demonstrate:

  • Extensive post-registration midwifery experience, with evidence of autonomous decision‑making
  • Commitment to lifelong learning, reflective practice, and professional growth
  • Resilience, motivation, and excellent organisational skills
  • A genuine appetite for challenge and innovation.
Applicant suitability

Given the intensity of the training and the academic requirements, applicants should carefully consider their readiness to undertake this role alongside their current responsibilities.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have excellent leadership and clinical skills, as well as evidence of continuing professional development.

Role

The successful applicant will undertake the Trainee Advanced Practitioners programme, which is a structured training while remaining embedded in your existing clinical team. The role includes:

  • Clinical Practice:
Developing enhanced assessment, diagnostic and decision‑making skills to support safe, evidence‑based care across the maternity pathway.
  • Leadership & Management:
Supporting quality improvement, service development and contributing to strategic priorities.
  • Education:

Participating in teaching, supporting colleagues’ learning, and acting as a positive role model.
  • Research:
Engaging with evidence‑based practice, critical enquiry, and contributing to the development of maternity knowledge.

Your role will be integral to the patient journey from outpatient assessment to ongoing acute care for pregnant people.

The post holder will work as a highly skilled and experienced autonomous practitioner across the Maternity services as part of a well‑established specialist multidisciplinary and multi‑agency team. You will be managing and supporting a broad range of complex maternity patient cases and be part of the MDT planning care pathways, follow‑up and acute care.
