Senior Staff Nurse / Midwife Post Birth Contraception

The Senior Staff Nurse / Midwife for Post‑Birth Contraception plays a key role in delivering high‑quality contraception care and supporting maternity staff through expert clinical guidance.
The purpose of the role is to work collaboratively with maternity teams to ensure timely post‑pregnancy contraception prior to discharge from inpatient settings. This includes providing antenatal contraception counselling and facilitating postnatal access to each patient's chosen method, including LARC options (implants, injectables, POP, condoms), and arranging referrals for intrauterine device fitting in community clinics.
The post holder will also offer professional expertise in contraception practice within maternity services, providing advice, information, and support to both patients and colleagues to promote safe, effective, and person‑centred care.
Responsibilities- Act as a clinical expert providing specialist knowledge and advice to midwives, nurses and junior medical staff working within the unit.
- Act as a resource to other areas within the Trust as required.
- Proactively support the midwifery and nursing teams, acting as a positive role model and promoting best clinical and professional practice.
- Demonstrate excellent communication and leadership skills; be actively involved in recruitment, staff development reviews and facilitate orientation and training programmes.
- Represent nursing or midwifery/department at local and wider meetings.
- Participate and assist with systematic monitoring of performance and evaluation of nursing/midwifery practice.
- Maintain a non‑judgemental attitude to all ages, sexualities, genders and ethnicities, and understand the specific needs of certain groups.
- Provide antenatal contraception counselling and facilitate postnatal access to each patient's chosen method, including LARC options; arrange referrals for IUD fitting in community clinics.
- Appropriate post registration experience in Contraception and Sexual Health
- Experience of working independently
- Appropriate proven leadership and management experience
- Experience of working with a variety of age groups, genders, sexualities and ethnicities
- Experience of undertaking research or audit projects
- Evidence of commitment to research‑based practice or evidence of project work undertaken
- Experience as preceptor / mentor and in providing teaching
- Organisation and management skills
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and problem solve
- Competency in medication administration and management including vaccines and IM injections
- Ability to work autonomously or as part of a team
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Able to manage difficult and stressful situations
- Able to act as a role model and as a mentor/assessor
- Good IT skills (Office: Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
- Ability to undertake advanced nursing procedures and tasks
- Willingness to work flexibly, covering changing service needs, including variable hours and rotation across sites
- Ability to cope with physical demands of the role
- Active 1st level registration with NMC
- Relevant training in sexual health and contraception
- Qualification in teaching, assessing and mentoring
- Willingness to participate in learning and update educational needs
- Letter of Competence for Subdermal Implants – Insertion & Removal
