Overview

The role is for a Biomedical Sciences Laboratory Technician in the Biomedical Sciences Teaching Laboratories. You will join the Pharmacology teaching technical team, supporting the day-to-day setup and running of the Pharmacology teaching lab under the guidance of the lead teaching technician and other team members. You will contribute to teaching preparation, technical operations of a large multi-discipline laboratory, and support the student learning experience for hundreds of undergraduate and postgraduate students weekly.

Techniques you would be using include tissue dissection and preparation, cell culture, micro-organism preparation, and making complex physiological buffers and drug stock solutions. This is a term-time only contract (37 weeks/year), working 35 hours/week, Monday to Friday.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare materials for teaching sessions, such as buffer solutions, drug stock solutions, and isolated animal tissue preparations (including dissections).
  • Maintain stock levels and the chemical inventory in the preparation lab.
  • Provide troubleshooting and support to academic staff and students during sessions.
  • Enforce local safety rules and uphold standards of behaviour for laboratory users.
  • Contribute to lab operational activities, including equipment maintenance, repair, cleaning, safety records, and inventories.
  • Lay out equipment and instruments at each student station and ensure the lab is safe and ready for use after sessions.
  • Follow Health & Safety guidelines for removal and handling of hazardous and non-hazardous waste.
  • Set up display equipment (e.g., AV aids, display boards) as required.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Experience working in a busy Biomedical Sciences (or similar) shared lab environment.
  • Self-motivated and able to contribute to both individual tasks and team goals.
  • Strong organizational and multi-tasking abilities to meet deadlines.
  • Good problem-solving skills and high attention to detail.
  • Previous experience in customer service or service delivery roles.
  • Effective, clear communicator with the confidence to enforce local safety rules and uphold lab standards.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams).
  • Commitment to providing quality technical support for delivery of practical teaching in Pharmacology.
