Cyber Security Detection Engineering Squad Lead

Salary: Circa £90,000

Locations: Bristol, Norwich or York

Overview: This is a great job for someone who loves getting hands‑on with modern detection engineering while leading and developing others. You might already be leading a small team, or you’re a senior detection engineer ready to step up. You’ll enjoy shaping how detections are built, improving visibility across complex environments, and coaching others to do their best work.

A bit about the job

You’ll join our Cyber Security Engineering team and lead a small squad of Detection Engineers. Together, you’ll design, build and improve detections across Microsoft Sentinel and Defender XDR—helping us spot threats faster and respond with confidence.

You’ll own the detection lifecycle end to end, from onboarding new log sources to tuning detections and improving telemetry quality. Along the way, you’ll work closely with teams across cyber security, including the GSOC, Incident Response and Threat Hunting.

It’s a role with real impact. You’ll help us strengthen visibility, close detection gaps, and build a more resilient security capability—while supporting your team to grow and thrive.

Skills and Experience
  • Strong hands‑on experience building and tuning detections in Microsoft Sentinel and Defender XDR
  • Good understanding of log pipelines, schemas, and telemetry quality (including ASIM mapping)
  • Experience leading, mentoring or coaching engineers
  • Confidence using KQL and automation tools such as Power Shell or Python
  • Ability to work across teams and manage detection backlogs and delivery priorities
Benefits
  • Salary:
Circa £90K (depending on location, skills, experience, and qualifications)
  • Bonus opportunity – 12% of annual salary (actual amount depends on performance and Aviva’s)
  • Generous pension scheme – Aviva will contribute up to 14%, depending on what you put in
  • 29 days holiday + bank holidays, with option to buy or sell up to 5 days
  • Aviva‑funded Private Medical Benefit to help you get expert support when you need it
  • Up to 40% discount on Aviva products, and other retailer discounts
  • Up to £1,200 of free Aviva shares per year through our Matching Share Plan and Save As You Earn scheme
  • Brilliantly supportive policies including parental and carer’s leave
  • Flexible benefits to suit you, including sustainability options such as cycle to work
  • Make a difference, be part of our Aviva Communities and use your 3 paid volunteering days to help others
  • We take your wellbeing seriously with lots of support and tools
