Much more than law
The Government Legal Department (GLD) is the largest provider of legal services across government, working with all the main Whitehall departments. From energy to security, from roads to rivers, health to human rights, our work touches on most aspects of public life. From developing and drafting legislation to helping to secure economic and trade relationships, providing legal advice on polices to ensuring value from contracts, our work is stimulating and varied.
As Legal Project Manager, you’ll be joining the Legal Delivery Division, which sits within the Legal Operations Directorate. Our work is key to the future effectiveness of GLD’s work. We offer support to lawyers through areas such as legal process improvement, effective technology use and data‑driven insights. We also provide complimentary service skills, such as Legal Project Managers. In all our work, we’re committed to excellence and innovation, helping GLD to achieve its vision of being an outstanding, future‑ready legal organisation.
Your roleAs Legal Project Manager, you’ll be responsible for the successful delivery of legal projects across GLD. Through data‑driven and technology‑enabled methods, you’ll drive efficiency and enhance service delivery.
To achieve this, you’ll confidently lead legal projects, reviewing existing processes to uncover areas of inefficiency. You’ll develop new tools, processes and playbooks to create improvements that are built to last. You’ll lead change management: designing and implementing strategic initiatives and projects to achieve process optimisation across the GLD Directorates. You’ll provide operational support in terms of planning, scoping, financials, operational risks, reporting and coordinating teams, enabling lawyers to focus on legal work.
As this is a leadership role, you’ll be integral to developing the wider team and building its presence across the GLD. You’ll coordinate teams to effectively deliver on day‑to‑day project execution. This role will exercise your excellent relationship management skills. And it’s an exciting time to shape the future of the Legal Delivery Division.
About youTo be equal to the role, you’ll be experienced in end‑to‑end legal project delivery. You will have created clear project plans, trackers and status reports. You’ve managed scope, risks, timelines and project deliverables. Experience applying appropriate project methodologies (e.g. Agile, Lean, hybrid) in a legal context will also be useful.
While it’s not necessary that you have a legal qualification, it’s key that you have a strong understanding and interest in the legal context. You’ll be able to introduce new legal technologies and lead the change management that goes with them, while confidently running multiple legal projects at the same time. Plus, you’ll bring experience of allocating and managing legal resources to deliver outcomes cost‑effectively.
You’re comfortable with data management, reporting and managing project budgets.
You can confidently build credibility with senior legal stakeholders and influence delivery decisions in our complex, cross‑functional environment.
It would be desirable if you had relevant project management qualifications, such as Prince2, MSP or Agile accreditation. We’d also like for you to be proficient in MS Office and M365, familiarity with MS Project, Visio and Power BI. As well as experienced in applying lean/continuous improvement methodologies.
BenefitsGLD encourages its people to develop their skills in a nurturing environment. Other benefits include access to a valuable civil service pension and flexible working arrangements.
Our vision is to be an outstanding legal organisation and a brilliant place to work where everyone can thrive and fulfil their potential. This is an exciting time for GLD, with cutting edge legal work on global issues and a transformation agenda which is ensuring the Department exemplifies the Modern Civil Service.
