The Government Legal Department (GLD) is the largest provider of legal services across government, working with all the main Whitehall departments. From energy to security, from roads to rivers, health to human rights, our work touches on most aspects of public life. From developing and drafting legislation to helping to secure economic and trade relationships, providing legal advice on policies to ensuring value from contracts, our work is stimulating and varied.
We are looking for Grade 7 financial services lawyers to join the Treasury Legal Advisers (TLA), the in‑house legal department on HM Treasury, the UK’s finance and economics ministry. We play a key role in the Government’s Economic Growth Agenda. TLAs advise on a range of areas, including the regulation of financial services, public spending, market interventions and state‑owned assets, trade negotiations, sanctions, money laundering and illicit finance.
Your roleAs a Treasury Legal Adviser, you’ll advise on a range of areas, such as the regulation of financial services, public spending, market interventions and state‑owned assets, trade negotiations, sanctions, money laundering and illicit finance. One of your core responsibilities will be drafting secondary legislation, and you’ll get to see legislation from conception to enactment. This will be an opportunity to be a creative, innovative thinker.
We place a high value on collaboration, preferring to work in small teams rather than independently. Also, we work with legal and policy colleagues across other government departments, legal teams from the Bank of England and the Financial Conduct Authority.
As a Grade 7 lawyer, your G6 line manager will help and encourage you to develop your expertise. As the heart of your work will be the development of your public law skills, this will prepare you well for any legal career within the GLD.
About youTo be a good fit, you’ll bring knowledge and experience of UK financial services and the regulation of financial services. It would be desirable if you also had familiarity with one or more of the following: commercial law, company law, and/or regulatory law, and experience in public law.
It is key that you’re willing to quickly learn new areas and skills in law, including legislative drafting. You’ll be interested in public law and ready to expand your knowledge.
As a legal mind, you think strategically and creatively, seeing issues within their wider context and advising accordingly. Sound analysis and legal research lead to timely, fit‑for‑purpose advice. Plus, you have reliable legal judgment and appreciation of risk.
The following behaviours make up the Success Profiles of this role:
- Making Effective Decisions
- Managing a Quality Service
- Communicating and Influencing
- Working Together
All GLD employees must hold BPSS security clearance. If successful for this post you must hold, or be willing and able to obtain, CTC level security clearance. You can start your position while getting this clearance level.
BenefitsGLD encourages its people to develop their skills in a nurturing environment. Other benefits include access to a valuable civil service pension and flexible working arrangements.
Much more than lawOur vision is to be an outstanding legal organisation and a brilliant place to work where everyone can thrive and fulfil their potential. This is an exciting time for GLD, with cutting edge legal work on global issues and a transformation agenda which is ensuring the Department exemplifies the Modern Civil Service.
