Overview

Job holders will provide faith and pastoral care to prisoners, staff and families within their own faith or belief tradition while recognising the needs of those from other traditions. The role is non‑rotational, non‑operational and does not involve line management.

Responsibilities
  • Offer guidance and pastoral care to prisoners, staff and families, liaising with the Faith and Belief Adviser (FBA) as required.
  • Plan, lead and facilitate worship, meditation, prayer and faith‑specific meetings, ensuring chaplaincy care is available at all times.
  • Co‑ordinate worship facilities and manage the distribution of faith materials.
  • Assist with crisis management and mentorship for other chaplains and volunteers.
  • Support the Official Prison Visitor (OPV) scheme and promote it to all prisoners.
  • Develop local policy, procedures and practice in line with the relevant prison policy frameworks.
  • Participate in training programmes for staff, volunteers and chaplaincy teams.
  • Represent the chaplaincy team at meetings and committees, stepping in for the Managing Chaplain when necessary.
  • Contribute to the Assessment, Care in Custody and Teamwork (ACCT) process and other relevant boards.
  • Forge links with local faith communities and external agencies to support prisoners on release.
  • Collect and analyze data on service targets, ensuring accurate administration and reporting.
  • Assist with probation‑approved premises activities as agreed.
Required Qualifications and Attributes
  • Strong communication and influencing skills.
  • Capability to deliver high quality and adaptable service.
  • Willingness to change and improve processes.
  • Confidence in written and spoken English;
    Welsh is an advantage in Wales.
Faith/Belief Eligibility (Jan 2023)
  • Ordained (Bishop, Priest or Deacon) within the Anglican Communion or Porvoo Agreement churches.
  • Minimum three years in Holy Orders, formal endorsement from the Diocesan Bishop.
  • Signed Church of England/Church in Wales mutual flourishing documentation.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Anglican theology and practice.
  • Diocesan DBS clearance; up‑to‑date safeguarding training.
Hours of Work

Standard full‑time hours are 37 hours per week excluding unpaid breaks. Part‑time arrangements may be considered subject to the role’s requirements. Hours may include unsocial hours where required.
