Job Description & How to Apply Below

Senior Research Associate in W isotope ratio analysis

The role holder will examine the evolution of the Earth’s interior by refining the terrestrial record of 182 W/ 184 W. This builds on work already undertaken in the lab and will focus on generating targeted new data from some key samples and periods of time. The new analyses made will allow improved inferences to be made on the dynamics of the Earth’s mantle, how it interacts with the core and is influenced by processes of late accretion.

The data and implications will be written up as a manuscript.

What will you be doing?

The position involves making challenging, high-precision measurements on W isotope ratios. This will require both sample preparation, separation of W from sample matrices in a clean laboratory environment and analysis by multi-collector, inductively coupled plasma mass-spectrometer. The W isotope measurements will be supplemented, as necessary, with determinations of highly siderophile element abundances determined by isotope dilution. The first part of the project will involve an intensive phase of analytical work, followed by interpretation of the data produced and writing up the project for publication.

You

should apply if

We welcome applicants with notable experience in making high precision W isotope ratio measurements. Applicants should also be enthused by trying to understand the large scale evolution of the Earth using challenging isotope ratio analyses.
