OverviewOperating the telecommunication switchboard for all Trust hospitals, providing an efficient information service 24/7 to staff and customers.
Responsibilities- Answer and distribute calls from the public, GP’s, internal callers, other hospitals and agencies.
- Route calls to extensions, exchange lines, mobile staff via bleeps, mobile phones and radio pagers.
- Use initiative and sensitivity when dealing with unpredictable situations such as anxious patients, patients with mental health problems, language or disability barriers, media and complaints.
- Provide an appropriate and empathetic response to all enquiries.
- Operate the switchboard consoles and Bleep System to ensure a high quality telephone service across the Trust.
- Respond according to written procedures for emergency and non‑emergency requests.
- Coordinate emergency situations (e.g., cardiac arrests, fires, intruder alarms) by informing and ensuring the appropriate personnel attend.
- Prior experience as a switchboard operator or in a similar call handling role is desirable.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to remain calm and provide professional support in stressful situations.
- Competence in using switchboard and telecommunication systems.
