Responsibilities
  • Provide an efficient switchboard and information service 24/7 to all staff and customers of the Trust.
  • Carry out all responsibilities of an operator in a pleasant, courteous and professional manner at all times.
  • Use own initiative when dealing with situations outside procedure parameters, ensuring an appropriate and empathetic response.
  • Act as first point of contact for the Trust’s nine hospitals, receiving and distributing calls from the public, GP’s, internal callers, other hospitals and agencies.
  • Connect calls to extensions, exchange lines, or mobile staff via bleeps, mobile phones and radio pagers.
  • Handle unpredictable situations – anxious patients, patients with mental health problems, language or disability barriers, media inquiries and complaints – with sensitivity and initiative.
  • Respond to emergency and non‑emergency requests in accordance with designated written procedures.
  • Operate the switchboard consoles and Bleep System to maintain an efficient telephone service across the Trust.
  • Deal with medical emergencies, fire and intruder alarms, coordinating to ensure the right people are informed and directed.
  • Coordinate approximately 400 rotas daily for hospital staff.
