About the role
We are looking applicants interested in joining our Construction Delivery team. Due to further expansion of our works programmes, we have a range of positions available.
Dorset Highways carries out Dorset Council’s responsibilities as a highway authority for Dorset’s network. The service manages over 2,400 miles of carriageway and is responsible for everything associated with the highway assets such as bridges & structures, cycleways, footways, drainage, and road signs & markings.

Roles available- Road worker Level 1 £ 25,583 - £27,284 (Potential for Highway Maintenance Skilled Operative Level 2 apprenticeships with this post current starting salary of £26,824)
- Road worker Level 2 (Ganger) £26,824 - £29,540
- Road worker Level 3 (Chargehand) £28,598 - £32,597
Based on an annual 37 hour working week.
- 07:45 – 15:30 Monday – Friday (Winter) 35 hours
- 07:45 – 16:30 Monday – Thursday, 07:45 – 15:30 Friday (Summer) 39 hours

Job details by level- Road worker Level 1 – Entry level with some experience in Highways/Construction or similar preferred but not essential
- Road worker Level 2 – Experience in Highways work, Construction work, and/or LGV driver (Please note we are looking for driver/operators for our surface dressing operations, gully tankers, jetting equipment and velocity patching activities.)
- Road worker Level 3 – Considerable experience leading and supervising on Highway/Construction projects.
You are a passionate, dedicated individual interested in a career in Highway Construction and Maintenance. You enjoy working outdoors and learning new skills. You care about your local area and want to contribute to making Dorset a better place to live, work and visit.
Ideally you will have practical construction experience at either skilled or supervisory level. However, this is not essential as Dorset Council are committed to developing a fully trained and diverse team.
What we will need from you- A full driving Licence.
- A willingness to learn, be part of a team, be adaptable and reliable.
- Surface dressing, line marking, kerbing, concrete work, paving and slabbing, laying asphalt, drainage, iron works, post erection, sign erection, fencing, plant or agricultural operators, HGV drivers.
Our services run 365 days a year, 24 hours per day, therefore there will be a mandatory requirement and opportunity to participate on an out of hours standby rota. All staff will be trained to drive LGV vehicles for gritting and snow clearance.
The current standby payment is £196.31 for each week on call. This is paid in addition to your salary. Overtime for emergency call outs is paid at time and a half.
