Southmead Hospital, Bristol, a leading neurosciences centre in the UK, is delighted to offer an exciting Neurocritical Care Fellowship designed for those who are passionate about advancing their skills in the dynamic field of neurocritical care.

Who Should Apply?

Applicants must have full registration with the GMC. This fellowship is ideal for candidates who are within the final year of training or who are post‑CCT. Applicants should possess a strong foundation in critical care medicine, including an FFICM qualification or equivalent and a keen interest in the care of patients with acute neurological and neurosurgical disorders.

Main duties of the job

Key Features of the Fellowship:

  • High‑Volume Centre: Work in one of the busiest units in the UK, renowned for its excellence in neurocritical care, neurology, neurosurgery, neurotrauma and interventional neuroradiology. Southmead Hospital has a 24 hour a day 7 day a week acute stroke thrombectomy service and is one of the busiest centres in Europe. It delivers some of the highest neurotrauma survival rates in the UK.
  • Unique Rotations: Benefit from immersive rotations including in Interventional Neuroradiology and Neurosurgery
    , allowing you to gain a deep understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of neurocritical care.
  • Expert Mentorship: Train under the guidance of experienced consultants who are committed to fostering your clinical and academic development.
  • Research Opportunities: Engage in cutting‑edge research and quality improvement projects, with opportunities to present your work at national and international conferences. Recent NIHR‑supported research includes novel work on beta‑blockade in traumatic brain injury.
  • Generous Educational Budget: Up to £5000 annual educational budget is provided to support activities such as a PG Cert.
  • Simulation‑Based Training: Participate in regular simulation training sessions to enhance your decision‑making, procedural skills, and multidisciplinary team communication.

Person Specification Education/Training/Qualifications Essential
  • MB BS (or equivalent)
  • Full and unrestricted registration with GMC
  • FFICM or FRCA or equivalent or appropriate diploma relevant to postgraduate training
