Join Boston Medical Center (BMC) as a Senior Manager of Clinical Engineering overseeing the Clinical Engineering Department’s operations, budgeting, procurement, and regulatory compliance.
Position SummaryUnder general direction, responsible for directing day‑to‑day operations, managing a budget of over $30 million, supervising technical staff, overseeing maintenance and repair, procurement of biomedical instrumentation, and ensuring regulatory compliance across information technology and clinical services.
Essential Responsibilities- Direct the operation for the Department of Clinical Engineering in the IT Services Division, plan and organize technical and support activities.
- Ensure in‑house repair and outside servicing of biomedical instrumentation throughout the BMC Health System and affiliated Community Health Centers, approving outside service and performing cost analysis.
- Manage relationships with outside servicing vendors, aiming to reduce costs and improve service levels.
- Responsible for assets in excess of $30 million and recommend replacement equipment with input from nursing, physicians, and IT leadership.
- Develop and monitor operating budget, including salary, wages, overtime, non‑payroll items, and monitor after‑hours vendor repair costs.
- Lead capital planning, budgeting, and overall spend on equipment refreshes and new projects.
- Partner with clinicians, administrative staff, and manufacturers on technology assessment and procurement, following BMC procurement guidelines.
- Provide clinical engineering consultation for campus clinical redesign, department moves and consolidations.
- Review literature and distribute relevant information for continuing education.
- Investigate equipment incidents, determine cause, response and liability under SMDA compliance.
- Oversee real‑time critical care monitoring network – cabling, data exchange, hardware, software updates, and future integration.
- Develop and update compliance policies, ensure staff credentialing and competency maintenance.
- Provide in‑service education and equipment orientation to all departments.
- Participate in local, regional, and national organizations for education and promotion of technology support services.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
- Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Clinical Engineering or Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
- Seven (7) years of full‑time paid professional experience as a clinical or biomedical engineer.
- At least two years of supervisory experience.
- Experience in an academic medical center or state/municipal hospital setting preferred.
Comprehensive knowledge of biomedical engineering principles, biomedical instrumentation, electronic testing equipment, medical terminology, purchasing, budgeting practices, and relevant regulations (OSHA, Joint Commission, FDA, AAMI, SMDA, CAP, ASA). Ability to develop and administer performance and quality assurance programs, supervise and review work, provide clinical engineering guidance, prepare detailed reports, conduct cost analysis, negotiate vendor contracts, interpret service levels, instruct personnel, and demonstrate repair expertise.
Compensation$90,500 – $131,500 per year, plus benefits, bonuses, 403(b), paid time off, and other resources.
