Operations Manager, Supply Chain / Intl. Trade
Builders First Source, America’s largest supplier of building materials, invites professionals to join our team. As a key contributor, you will play a pivotal role in managing operations, ensuring efficient flow of materials, and supporting our mission to make home ownership more attainable.
PurposeUnder the general direction of the General Manager, this role manages multiple operations that control the flow of materials to and from the site, including manufacturing, distribution, and warehousing.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Oversee the overall operations and physical conditions of the facilities and equipment.
- Manage daily delivery and warehousing functions.
- Collaborate with department heads to train and develop personnel.
- Maintain operating budgets to meet or exceed profit targets.
- Plan operational strategies and set departmental priorities for smooth product flow.
- Review performance regularly, compiling reports on deliveries, back‑orders, hours worked, and shipments.
- Resolve issues related to processes, costs, orders, inventory, equipment, and systems.
- Prepare operational schedules and coordinate staffing with Warehouse, Shipping, Yard, Office, and Purchasing.
- Handle employee relations issues and use discretion in judgment.
- Foster cross‑department communication with Production, Sales, and Finance.
- Lead employee training programs for drivers, yard personnel, and supervisors.
- Analyze vendor evaluations and recommend improvements.
- Participate in order acceptance decisions.
- Implement safe operating practices in compliance with DOT, OSHA, and company policies.
- Plan and implement equipment and facility upgrades.
- Represent the company in professional trade groups and community events.
Supervises Plant Managers and other supervisors, handling hiring, training, performance appraisal, rewards, discipline, and conflict resolution.
Minimum RequirementsBachelor’s degree from a 4‑year college or university and four years of directly related experience in the lumber or building materials industry, with multiple assignments across all phases of the business. Knowledge of procurement, inventory management, and people supervision is required. Strong customer service experience and good organizational skills are essential.
Competencies Language SkillsAbility to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports, trade journals, and legal documents; respond to customer inquiries; write clear presentations; influence and persuade stakeholders; demonstrate strong leadership and teamwork.
Mathematical SkillsApply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions, and basic algebra and geometry to solve practical problems and interpret data.
Reasoning AbilityDefine problems, gather data, analyze facts, and draw valid conclusions; develop alternative solutions to complex issues.
Computer SkillsProficient with order processing and delivery systems; quick to learn new software.
Work Environment / Physical ActivityOccasional travel may be required. Must comply with safety policies and procedures. Work may involve sitting, standing, walking, handling tools, and operating machinery. The environment may include moderate noise and exposure to weather conditions on the yard.
