Nature and Scope
Under the general direction of the Associate or Executive Director, the Youth Development Director provides hands‑on leadership for the development and operations of various programs, such as the play center, teen leadership, day camp, membership, and community events. Activities may require extended periods outdoors.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and manage operating plans to promote program growth, impact, and safety.
  • Supervise staff and volunteers related to the overall department.
  • Oversee branch grant programs, ensuring compliance with grant standards, policies, and budgets.
  • Design strong youth development practices, processes, and procedures.
  • Plan and implement recruitment and community partnership initiatives.
  • Recruit, interview, hire, train, develop, schedule, supervise, and evaluate staff and volunteers for the After school Departments across multiple branches.
  • Conduct pilot programs and develop best‑practice plans for staff engagement.
  • Motivate staff, conduct performance reviews, and lead goal setting.
  • Manage budgets, enforce accountability and monitor financial performance.
  • Ensure program standards and safety procedures are met.
  • Oversee expenditures and revenue collection.
  • Use data to analyze financial trends and forecast future progress.
  • Manage registrations, rosters, and record‑keeping.
  • Market and distribute program information, organize registrations, and process scholarship applications.
  • Expand programs within the community in line with strategic plans.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with community organizations and other YMCA branches.
  • Foster a climate of innovation and provide high‑level member/customer service.
  • Coordinate initiatives with marketing, social media, communications, human resources, and financial development.
  • Respond promptly to member and community inquiries and complaints.
  • Lead meetings, training sessions, and special events.
  • Ensure all Y license and child‑care standards are met at each location.
  • Maintain accurate records for licensing, child health, and safety.
Requirements
  • High School diploma or GED with 4+ years of people or program management experience, or a bachelor’s degree with 2+ years in child development, recreation, elementary education, or a related field.
  • At least 1 year of supervisory responsibilities.
  • Strong communication skills with program participants, community leaders, volunteers, and staff.
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with stakeholders.
  • Excellent attention to detail and grant‑obligation execution.
  • Proficient in computers and technology applications.
  • Strong multitasking, independent problem‑solving, and time‑management skills.
  • Must complete within 30 days of hire:
    Child Abuse Prevention, Working with Program Volunteers, CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens training.
  • Must pass a Bright From the Start (BFTS) fingerprint background check.
Preferred Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in child development, recreation, elementary education, or related field.
  • 5+ years of program or people‑management experience in an educational or childcare environment.
  • Experience recruiting, cultivating, and supervising volunteers.
  • 4+ years of program or nonprofit experience.
  • YMCA Team Leader certification.
  • Prior people and program management experience.

This position requires sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to perform essential functions and supervise program activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations. Must be able to sit, reach, and move around the work environment and provide active supervision.
