Assistant Professor of Architecture
Are you passionate about shaping the future of architectural education and practice? We invite applications for a full‑time, tenure‑track Assistant Professor of Architecture with expertise in one or more of the following areas: architectural building design, technology, sustainable construction, studio pedagogy, design process, and professional practice. This position offers the opportunity to inspire the next generation of architects through innovative teaching, collaborative research, and meaningful engagement with the profession.
SDState is the state’s largest, most comprehensive university with over $94 million annual research expenditures, more than 200 academic programs and an enrollment of approximately 12,000 students. The School of Design offers accredited degrees in the visual arts (graphic design, studio arts) and the built environment (architecture, interior design and landscape architecture). The successful candidate will contribute to building national and international stature and recognition for the discipline, School and University.
SDSU offers a 4‑year Bachelor of Fine Arts in Architecture and a 2‑year NAAB accredited Masters of Architecture degree. Architecture has a unique mandate to remain a small program of no more than 220 students, making it one of the smallest architecture programs in the USA within a fabric of small agrarian and mining cities.
Must be authorized to work in the U.S.; sponsorship is not available for this position.
Key Responsibilities- Position is typically 60% teaching, 30% research, scholarship and creative activity, and 10% service.
- Teach courses within the professional curriculum, such as design studios, lectures, seminars, and workshops.
- Carry out a dynamic and robust agenda of research, scholarship and creative activity.
- Extend research/scholarship/creative activity agenda into the teaching environment.
- Provide service to the discipline, university, and community.
- Teach in multi‑disciplinary courses within the School of Design.
Salary: The salary for this position is commensurate with qualifications, starting at $68,000.

- Professional degree in Architecture or related field from a NAAB accredited institution or international equivalent by time of appointment.
- PhD in Architecture or a related field by time of appointment.
- Potential to develop and teach academic coursework in one or more of the disciplinary content areas.
- Potential to develop a peer‑reviewed research/scholarship/creative activity agenda in the discipline, specifically in design process and design pedagogy.
- Effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
- Professional practice experience in Architecture or a related design field.
- Record of service within the discipline and/or profession.
