South Dakota State University Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry & Physics is offering a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Organic Chemistry (Chemical Biology, Bioorganic Chemistry or Drug Design). We seek a dedicated research professional committed to excellence in research, teaching and student success. The ideal candidate will build a nationally competitive independent research program training undergraduate and graduate students, aligned with strengths in the department.
This 9-month, full-time, benefits-eligible position is located in Brookings, South Dakota.
As part of a broader faculty recruitment effort, SDSU is also conducting a parallel search for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Medicinal Chemistry in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Candidates with expertise bridging both areas are encouraged to review and apply to one or both positions.
The Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Physics provides students with a solid foundation in scientific disciplines through challenging coursework, laboratory explorations and research opportunities. Our recent graduates have gone on to work at local or national companies and research laboratories, attend medical schools, pursue graduate degrees, and teach at the high school and university levels.
Responsibilities- Develop an independent research program in Organic Chemistry (computational or experimental), with applications in Chemical Biology, Bioorganic Chemistry or Drug Design, that complements current research efforts within the Department.
- Incorporate Organic Chemistry related AI and/or Machine Learning tools and technologies into research and instruction.
- Disseminate research through publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations.
- Identify, secure and manage extramural grant funding for the individual research program and contribute to the department’s research portfolio.
- Develop and deliver curriculum for undergraduate and/or graduate students related to organic chemistry. Contribute to curriculum development aligning with industry standards and emerging trends to foster effective learning.
- Provide service to the department, college and university through participation in faculty committees, student recruitment, student orientation, accreditation and assessment, etc.

- PhD in Chemistry or a closely related field completed by first day of employment.
