Systems Engineer, Electronics Engineer, Electrical Engineering, Research Scientist
The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at South Dakota State University (SDSU) is seeking a highly motivated individual to work within the Image Processing Laboratory (IPLab) to engage in actively funded research in the areas of radiometric, geometric, and spatial characterization with a focus on correction, calibration and validation of satellite and airborne imaging systems. A successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge and capability to perform and evaluate absolute calibration methodology and field measurement techniques in field deployed operations, and have knowledge of orbital predicting of optical imaging sensors.
This position is located in Brookings
, South Dakota. This is a 12 month, full-time, benefits-eligible position.
The IPLab actively works with state‑of‑the‑art on‑orbit imaging sensors through funded research partnerships with NASA, USGS and with numerous commercial partners. The lab focuses its efforts on developing new and innovative methods of calibration and validation through ground field campaigns, in‑situ instruments and a worldwide set of ground reference sites to address the evolving needs of new and upcoming space missions.
Once these new methods are validated, they are then integrated into the operational evaluation of on‑orbit sensors to implement routine characterization. As an Imaging Engineer, this position will be involved in supporting these activities and working with our partners in devising creative and new techniques for calibration and validation of radiometric optical imagery and applying them to operational sensors to validate or correct the data from these sensors.
- Conduct research in the areas of Calibration and Validation of satellite remote sensing through coding and field work.
- Perform field vicarious calibration of on‑orbit sensor, using traditional calibration techniques.
- Manage Field calibration deployments to successfully support customers and grants, and develop calibration reports for such.
- Assist in guiding and directing research students in the lab.
SDState offers a wide range of excellent benefits including medical, dental, and flexible benefits, retirement plans, compensation packages, paid holidays, and vacation leave. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 6% matching, 10 hours of annual leave each month, 9.34 hours of sick leave each month, and eleven paid holidays. Employees also have access to internal and state‑sponsored training as well as reduced tuition for state‑supported courses at all State of South Dakota academic institutions.
Relocation benefits are available per university’s guidelines.
- Master’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or a field closely related to remote sensing or GIS completed by first day of employment.
- Minimum of two years’ experience in radiometric sensor calibration or related GIS application using remotely sensed optical imaging data.
- Experience working with Python and Matlab.
- Ability to work within a team environment.
- Effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
- Experience in/or knowledge of characterization and calibration of optical imaging sensors, preferred satellite or airborne based.
