Overview

Head Athletic Coach position with responsibilities for supervising and coordinating a high school sports program in Brookings School District 5-1. Reports to the Activities Administrator in conjunction with the high school principal.

• Instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategies and physical training necessary for individual and team success. Provide instruction that promotes moral values, pride of accomplishment, good social behavior, self-discipline and self-confidence.
• Establish the program's fundamental philosophy, organize conferences and staff meetings, and ensure staff awareness of the total program.
• Inform and train staff, encourage professional growth, delegate duties, supervise, and assess staff effectiveness at season end.
• Maintain discipline, resolve grievances, increase morale and cooperation, and perform other duties as assigned by the Activities Administrator.
• Assist the activities director with scheduling, transportation arrangements, athletic awards and event management; prepare for sport events and practices and adhere to facility schedules; coordinate with other athletic and custodial/maintenance staff.
• Provide documentation to fulfill state and district requirements concerning physical examinations, insurance, parental consent and eligibility; supervise use, inspection and maintenance of athletic facilities.
• Advise the Activities Administrator and recommend policy or procedural changes.
• Supervise and support high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in collaboration with the activities director and building principals.
• Direct and supervise student managers, statisticians and video crew; enforce code of conduct and communicate with parents when issues arise; assist athletes in post-secondary education plans as requested.
• Participate in annual budgetary process by recommending equipment and uniform purchases with consideration for price, quality, durability and safety; operate the program within budgetary allocations.
• Monitor admittance to practice facilities, weight room, equipment room and coaches’ offices and locker rooms; ensure proper use of facilities and equipment; secure facilities when leaving the building.
• Promote good public relations with media, booster clubs, parents, spectators and officials; organize pre-season meetings with parents, players and coaches; provide timely promotional information and releases to the media.

• Valid South Dakota teaching certificate/coaching endorsement
• Valid SDHSAA Coaches Education Program (Fundamentals of Coaching, First Aid & Concussion in Sports)
• Employed as a teacher in the Brookings School District
• Ability to organize and supervise a total (7-V) sports program
• Previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport
• Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects and strategies of the sport
