Overview
The State of Connecticut, Department of Corrections (DOC) is recruiting a Correctional HVAC Technician for the Brooklyn Correctional Institution. This full‑time, first shift position requires a 14‑week paid hazardous duty training at the Maloney Center for Training & Staff Development.
Responsibilities- Maintain steam, hot water heating, and chilled water piping and distribution systems.
- Maintain ventilation distribution, fan, and HVAC systems.
- Maintain steam and hot water boilers.
- Maintain chilled water piping, distribution, and chiller systems.
- Supervise assigned inmates performing HVAC and refrigeration tasks.
- Keep records of tool inventory and maintenance control.
- Protect the health and safety of staff, inmates, and the public.
- Perform snow and ice removal to maintain safe access for police, medical, staff, and public.
- Ensure compliance with federal and state statutes, agency directives, and facility policies.
- Three (3) years of experience in heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration trade.
- One (1) year of that experience at a highly skilled level.
- Graduation from a vocational or technical school in HVAC may substitute for one (1) year of experience.
- Valid motor vehicle operator’s license required.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Ability to operate and interpret computerized and automated control systems.
- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Experience with repair and operation of commercial HVAC and refrigeration equipment and associated controls.
- Valid S1, S2, D1, or D2 HVAC contractor or journeyperson license.
- Experience with computer‑building management systems and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel).
Incumbents must have general good health, free from disease or injury that would impair health or usefulness, and possess sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance, and sensory acuity to perform all duties of the class.
