Position SummaryPosition Summary: We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Patient Services Associate/Finance - Brooklyn. In this role, the successful candidate performs diversified duties in the patient access departments. Duties will vary depending on the needs of the work in the specific area. Duties include but are not limited to: coordinating registration and ED unit clerk functions, triaging and reviewing daily work to ensure prioritization and minimal backlog, insurance verification, financial assistance assessment, billing and follow up activities.
Job Responsibilities- Complies with HIPAA, OSHA, JCAHO, NYU policies and procedures
- Admitting Office:
- Performs registrations/admissions promptly and accurately, including adding insurance, accident information and account notes, reviews and completes MSPs as required; obtains demographic and financial information from patient/family in a courteous and sensitive manner; secures signatures, copies insurance cards, updates computer system, prints charts and labels, and escorts patient to unit when necessary, in an accurate and timely manner
- Ability to accurately change names, change patient types and transfer patients
- Calls appropriate insurance carrier to notify of visit and/or request authorization for admission, and documents account accordingly
- Screens patients to determine eligibility for Medicaid and refers accounts to Medicaid Area
- Verifies insurance recipient/policy number and effective dates of service on multiple verification tools and updates account accordingly
- Calls insurance companies to verify insurance and secure authorization number for admission/procedure and updates account
- Answers questions and provides information regarding policies and procedures related to admitting, outpatient services, and financial matters; distributes patient handbooks and charity care/Medicaid information
- Interprets hospital regulations to patients
- Makes decisions to facilitate departmental workflow in presence or absence of supervisor
- Distributes HIPAA Privacy Notice and obtains patient acknowledgement when applicable
- Maintains documentation of expirations, filing of death certificates and organ donation
- Facilitates bed procurements, patient transfers, bed rounds, and maintains bed board
- Prepares admission folders, prints reports, census and schedules
- Insurance Verification:
- Verifies insurance/address information for billing and notification; initiates procedures to maintain accurate patient/insurance records
- Ability to add insurance accurately
- Screens patients to determine Medicaid eligibility and refers accounts accordingly
- Verifies policy numbers and effective dates, updates account on a timely basis
- Calls insurance to verify insurance and secure authorization for admission/procedure
- Prepares admission folders and files accounts daily
- Reviews and completes MSPs as required
- Coordinates daily workflow to ensure accounts are completed timely and accurately
- Emergency Department:
- Performs ER registrations promptly and accurately; adds insurance and notes; completes MSPs as required
- Ability to change names and transfer patients
- Obtains demographic and financial information politely; updates system and prints labels
- Screens for Medicaid eligibility; provides Charity Care and Medicaid notices; refers accounts to Medicaid Area
- Calls insurance to notify of visit and obtain authorization; updates account
- Verifies insurance and obtains authorization for Medicaid patients
- Completes inpatient admissions for ED patients timely and accurately; secures bed assignment and updates system
- Tracks patients in the ED
- Enters charges, updates physician fields, prepares charts and maintains ED Log
- Answers phones and pages appropriate parties
- Provides information on policies and procedures; distributes handbooks and Medicaid information
- Distributes HIPAA Privacy Notice and obtains acknowledgment when applicable
- Places laboratory and radiology orders and ensures results are placed in ED chart as needed
- Completes Admission Consult Sheet for all admitted patients
- Cooperates with ED and hospital staff; coordinates daily workflow for ED accounts
- Medicaid Financial Counseling:
- Conducts face-to-face interviews to screen for eligibility for financial programs (Medicaid, Hill Burton)
