Summary
The CAD/CAM Designer is responsible for creating and developing detailed 2D and 3D models, engineering drawings, and CNC programs that support product design and manufacturing operations. This role bridges design engineering and production by ensuring designs are manufacturable, accurate, and optimized for efficiency. The CAD/CAM Designer works closely with engineers, machinists, and production staff to translate concepts into practical, high‑quality solutions.
EssentialJob Duties
- Create and modify 2D and 3D CAD models and technical drawings based on engineering specifications and design requirements.
- Develop CAM programs for CNC machining, ensuring efficiency, accuracy, and compliance with quality standards.
- Work with engineers to refine product designs for manufacturability (DFM) and recommend improvements.
- Assist in designing jigs, fixtures, and tooling to support manufacturing operations.
- Prepare and maintain accurate documentation, drawings, and file structures in CAD/CAM systems.
- Collaborate with machinists and production teams to troubleshoot and resolve issues with CNC programs, tooling, or part designs.
- Support prototype builds and ensure smooth transition from design to production.
- Stay current on new CAD/CAM software capabilities and industry best practices.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Design, Drafting, or a related technical field; equivalent experience considered.
- 2+ years of CAD/CAM design experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Proficiency in CAD software (Solid Works, AutoCAD, NX, CATIA, or equivalent).
- Experience with CAM software (Mastercam, Fusion 360, or equivalent).
- Strong knowledge of CNC machining processes, materials, and tooling.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and GD&T.
- Strong attention to detail and problem‑solving skills.
- Good communication and teamwork abilities.
- Good project management and documentation skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, able to explain quality “how to” and “why” to employees.
No direct supervisory responsibilities.
Language SkillsAbility to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees. Display professionalism in all verbal and written communications.
Mathematical SkillsAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure; compute rates, ratios, margins, and percentages; and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning AbilityApply common sense to follow written, oral, or diagram instructions; use logical reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions; apply deductive and inductive reasoning to produce sensible conclusions.
