Notes: This position is for sponsorship into a future correctional academy. Qualified applicants will be placed on a waiting list until a sponsorship is available. After successful completion of the academy and passing the State Exam for Law Enforcement, the Deputy in Training will be promoted to a Deputy Sheriff.

Essential Job Functions

  • The on-coming Detention Deputy In Training will conduct a head count in accordance with agency policies, ensuring visual confirmation of a human torso as the presence of an inmate.
  • All activities, emergencies, inmate movements, video visitation, recreation, programs, and incident reports will be noted in the Hernando County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) approved Jail Management System (JMS).
  • Supervise the distribution of inmate meals and exercise control over trays, utensils, and cup/milk cartons to ensure accountability.
  • Responsible for the proper recreation of inmates in accordance with established policy and procedures.
  • Escort and standby with Medical personnel for the distribution of medications and any emergency medical situations.
  • Responsible for the proper control and use of security keys or any security equipment assigned.
  • Responsible for the cleanliness of the housing unit.
  • Keep control of razors and issue razors to inmates at designated times, in accordance with procedures.
  • Collect outgoing mail between 2345 and 0045 hours daily. Verify name and return address on each letter with the inmate . Screen mail per FMJS and Hernando County Detention directives.
  • Deliver mail to the control center or mailroom as appropriate.
  • Conduct random and periodic searches of the housing area for contraband, weapons, and prohibited items.
  • Pat down and/or search every inmate who leaves or returns to the housing unit.
  • Be well versed in the proper use of radio, telephone, intercom, and emergency alarm systems.
  • Perform additional duties as directed by higher authority.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Possession of a valid State of Florida driver license.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age, a U.S. citizen, and of good moral character per 943.13 F.S.
  • Must have passed the Florida Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (FBAT/CJBAT) for Corrections within the last four years.
  • Knowledge,

    Skills and Abilities

    include the ability to analyze situations quickly, obtain information through interviews and observations, communicate clearly, and follow instructions.
  • Ability to operate radio equipment and adhere to radio communication rules.
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly under emergency conditions.
  • Knowledge of pertinent laws, rules and procedures related to operations and violations, knowledge of the Hernando County Detention Center and its demographics, and knowledge of Sheriff's Office Policies and Procedures.

Essential Physical Skills

  • Maintain an above-average physical condition and the ability to physically control inmates.
  • 20/20 vision (corrected).
  • Ability to crawl ten yards, drag or lift or carry 150 pounds 25 feet, run 100 yards unassisted.
  • Ability to deal with verbal assaults, walk unassisted, and hear with normal language levels (assisted/unassisted).
  • Manual dexterity and normal color perception.
