Job Summary

This operations position oversees the safe operation, daily monitoring, and maintenance of large‑scale industrial computer‑based ammonia systems and office HVAC systems. The role supports Refrigeration Technician II & III and the Facility Manager to ensure assets are managed per IIAR, ASHRAE, ASME, EPA, OSHA, and applicable state and local codes. The ideal candidate has HVAC/R schooling, RETA Certified Assistant Refrigeration Operator (CARO) certification, universal EPA, and at least four years of HVAC/R service and maintenance experience.

Responsibilities
  • Perform inspections and preventive maintenance on refrigeration storage equipment (50–3,000 HP).
  • Use knowledge of screw and reciprocating compressors, electrical troubleshooting, and control/alarm systems.
  • Maintain HVAC/R systems using PC, PLC, and master refrigeration control systems.
  • Perform oil checks, analysis, filter changes, belt adjustments, and ammonia leak detection.
  • Check compressors, condensers, and cycle operations.
  • Log time and materials in CMMS.
  • Change/fill water treatment chemical levels.
  • Oversee Refrigeration, Electrical, and HVAC systems: monitoring, trending, troubleshooting, repairs, leak detection, inspections, reporting, glycol under‑floor warming system, and energy‑management strategies.
  • Ensure product integrity through temperature monitoring and control.
  • Evaluate and report equipment condition.
  • Perform small electrical repairs and welding.
  • Communicate daily system operation and maintenance information.
  • Maintain housekeeping and cleanup of refrigeration machine rooms and maintenance areas.
  • Interpret plans, schematics, manuals, and specifications.
  • Conduct audits for safety documentation (food safety, ePSM, PSM).
  • Check freezer and cooler curtain conditions.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot HVAC issues, repair or replace defective equipment.
  • Carrying out preventive maintenance on HVAC equipment.
  • Suggest efficiency ideas and cost‑reduction measures.
  • Work in extreme cold/heat, ammonia, noise, dust, grease, and high‑voltage environments.
  • Complete other duties as assigned, including light carpentry, painting, plumbing, and grounds maintenance.
  • Adhere to safety policies, procedures, and wearing PPE.
  • Participate in departmental on‑call program.
  • Order parts and devices in CMMS to complete work orders efficiently.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and inventory.
  • Maintain technical skills and required certifications.
  • Respond to emergencies to ensure safety.
  • Champion overall safety in the department.
  • Comply with OSHA and other regulations.
  • Collaborate with leadership to meet strategic goals.
  • Follow department policies, including attire, grooming, and attendance.
  • Serve on committees or focus groups as needed.
  • Build relationships and demonstrate cooperation.
Qualifications Education
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • HVAC/R tech school preferred.
Experience
  • Four years of industrial HVAC/R experience, or equivalent education and related experience.
  • Preferred experience with anhydrous ammonia (R717).
Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
  • Valid state Driver’s License and proof of liability coverage.
  • Completed Sysco defensive driving program.
  • Powered Industrial Equipment Certification within 3 months.
  • HAZWOPER 24‑hr training, respirator fit test, and physical.
  • Universal EPA certification.
  • RETA Certified Assistant Refrigeration Operator (CARO).
  • Obtain RETA Certified Industrial Refrigeration Operator (CIRO) within 6 months.
  • CIRO prerequisite to advance to Refrigeration Operator III / Service Tech.
Professional Skills
