Certified Medical Biller
* Must be certified as a coder for billing.
The Medical Billing Clerk is responsible for handling the administrative aspects of billing in a healthcare setting, primarily focusing on data entry and posting remittance advice to patient accounts. This role requires accurate management of payments, patient information, and routine interactions with billing software systems. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of medical billing and coding practices and be certified as a coder.
Key Responsibilities Payment Posting and Data Entry- Prepare and submit insurance claims for reimbursement.
- Review and verify patient billing information for accuracy and completeness.
- Follow up on unpaid claims and resolve billing discrepancies.
- Communicate with insurance companies, patients, and healthcare providers to resolve billing issues.
- Respond to patient inquiries about bills, insurance coverage, or account balances.
- Follow up on denied or underpaid claims with insurers for resolution.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations.
- Update and maintain patient records in the billing system.
- Generate billing reports and assist with other duties as requested.
- Reconcile patient accounts by identifying and resolving any discrepancies in payment posting.
- Follow up on remittance errors or mismatches in insurance payments and communicate with insurance providers when necessary.
- Maintain up-to-date patient accounts, ensuring that all payments are reflected accurately and promptly.
- Generate reports on account balances, payment status, and outstanding remits as requested by the Billing Director.
- Assist with filing and organizing billing documents electronically or in hard copy format.
Skills and Qualifications Education
- High school diploma or GED required; a technical degree in a relevant field (such as healthcare administration, medical billing, or office administration) is a plus but not necessary.
- 1 year of previous experience in medical billing, data entry, or a related administrative role is preferred.
- Familiarity with EOBs and remittance posting is a plus
- Proficiency with billing software (e.g., Greenway, Kareo, Athenahealth, or Epic) a plus.
- Strong data entry and typing skills with attention to detail.
- Basic knowledge of medical billing codes (CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS) is helpful but not mandatory.
