Overview

The service area director, or field director, is a professional Scouting generalist with a consistent record of success whose passionate overriding mission in Scouting is to train, guide, mentor, and coach a minimum of three unit serving executives in membership growth strategies and tactics, new unit development, fund raising, leadership recruitment, cultivation and development of volunteers, activity and training promotion and unit service.

Ultimately, a field director prepares their team to help units succeed in quality program delivery by providing outstanding customer service and having an attitude of servant leadership, ensuring the success of the council’s strategic plan.

Responsibilities
  • Meet regularly with their assigned USEs (District Executives) by riding with them in their districts weekly to check on progress related to the council strategic plan as well as goals related to membership, finance, program, manpower, and unit.
  • Be the service area expert of each phase of the Scouting program and review all Scouting program resources to guide and support USEs and units where needed in quality program delivery.
  • Help and ensure their assigned USE’s visit with each unit at least once per
    • Help the USE observe the unit delivering the Scouting program at their meeting location and train them on what to look for in high‑quality and struggling units.
    • Work with the USE and unit key-3 in conducting a unit health assessment, at least twice a year.
  • Work with each USE and train them to follow the council Friends of Scouting (FOS) plan and achieve their annual fundraising goal.
  • Train USE’s on how best to promote council programs and encourage units and families to attend activities and advance youth.
  • Help the USE identify potential sources of new youth members and ensure they are well trained on the council membership plan in order to help their units grow and to support graduating members to the next level program.
  • Help the USE identify and cultivate potential unit and district-level manpower for appropriate council-level support in program and fundraising.
  • Train and help the USE strategize on how to ensure on-time charter renewal of each unit by December 31st of each year.
  • Help the USE identify opportunities in the community for potential new units, strategically target possible chartered organizations, and conduct sales.
  • Provide leadership, training, and support by being available, engaged, and present with each assigned. Maintain a culture of support and service.
  • Understand each district in your service area by attending district meetings with your USE and getting to know district-level volunteers.

Education
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
Qualifications
  • Seeking individuals who are professional in dress, well‑spoken, and comfortable in social and networking settings.
  • Strong interpersonal, written communication, and verbal presentation skills.
  • Proven FOS success and skills in community organization. Individuals should understand the process to identify potential upper‑level prospects and have the skill set to engage other volunteers to approach potential prospects.
  • Ability to manage the current high‑functioning Family FOS Campaign.
  • Ability to supervise staff utilizing effective back‑dating and work.
  • Effective in managing membership and new unit organization to achieve growth on a consistent basis, with attention to retention of units and youth.
  • Ability to manage functioning districts at a high level of operation and effectively utilize the annual nominating committee process.
  • Prior experience in Scouting must include the direct supervision of one or more staff members. Must be able to effectively lead a team of professionals.
