Registered Nurse role in long term care facility. The description below reflects responsibilities, qualifications, and expectations as provided.
- Administrative Functions
:
Assist the Director of Nursing Services in directing day-to-day nursing activities; develop, maintain, and update policies and procedures; ensure reference materials are current; recommend materials to support resident care; ensure Nursing Service Manual is current and followed; provide written and oral reports to the Director; review policies, procedures, and job descriptions; coordinate nursing services with other resident services; ensure compliance with job descriptions;
participate in quality assurance programs; participate in facility surveys as requested; update discharge plans and assist in planning discharge nursing services; plan and meet with staff to organize services, programs, and activities; admit, transfer, and discharge residents; complete accident/incident reports; interpret policies to personnel, residents, visitors, and agencies; perform administrative duties (forms, reports, evaluations, charting). - Compliance & Security
:
Agree to protect user IDs/passwords and resident information; report suspected violations; report unauthorized access attempts; ensure privacy and security of information systems. - Committee Functions
:
Attend committees (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Pharmaceutical, Quality Assessment); prepare reports; provide data to QA committees; participate in Care Plan Committee agendas; implement committee recommendations. - Personnel Functions
:
Ensure adequate licensed staff and nursing assistants per shift; develop work assignments; delegate administrative authority to Charge Nurse; ensure CNAs are trained; perform rounds to ensure quality care; monitor absenteeism; report problems; ensure policies and dress codes are followed; review complaints and grievances; maintain interdepartmental rapport; foster warmth and a calm environment; participate in staffing, performance evaluations, and disciplinary processes;
enforce non-discrimination; report exposures and fraud; protect electronic security (log off or password security) as required. - Nursing Care Functions
:
Inform on admissions, room assignments, and readiness; greet and escort new admissions; rounds with physicians; promote timely documentation; plan with resident/family/physician; notify changes in condition; daily resident visits; ensure licensed personnel provide direct care; verify nursing notes reflect resident status; provide direct care as needed; start IVs, collect specimens; monitor vitals; admit/transfer/discharge residents; report issues; assist in corrective actions; keep Director informed;
assist in monitoring seriously ill residents; authorize appropriate use of restraints per policy; ensure RN/LPN medication procedures are followed; review medication charts; inspect care areas; ensure residents can call for help; meet with residents/families; arrange transportation for discharge; inform families of death and coordinate funeral home contact. - Staff Development
:
Develop and schedule in-service training; assist in annual in-service planning (OSHA, TB, HIPAA, Abuse Prevention, Safety, Infection Control); plan clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees; pursue continuing education and license maintenance. - Safety & Sanitation
:
Develop safety standards; identify and train staff in exposure-prone tasks; ensure PPE supplies; enforce PPE use and disposal; supervise safety in equipment use; maintain clean and sanitary work areas; implement hand hygiene; participate in fire and disaster drills; support infection control program; follow isolation precautions when needed; report hazardous conditions; ensure safe operation of equipment; maintain MSDS records; use safety equipment when lifting;
adapt to emergencies; coordinate with residents and families for needs. - Equipment & Supply
:
Advise Director on equipment and supply needs; maintain stock levels of medications and supplies; assist in preventive maintenance programs; ensure safe operation of equipment; ensure trained personnel operate equipment; minimize waste; maintain MSDS on hazardous chemicals. - Care Plan & Assessment
:
Participate in preliminary and comprehensive assessments; develop and review care plans; involve residents in planning; ensure staff are aware of care plans; ensure adherence to care plans; review nurses’ notes for plan alignment; assist in MDS planning and RAP/Triggers; verify treatments align with care plans and resident wishes. - Budget & Planning
:
Stay informed on economic conditions; recommend nursing service adjustments; suggest equipment needs; report suspected fraud related to billing/costs. - Supervisory Requirements
:
Help supervise nursing staff; as RN, exercise administrative authority and accountability; ensure staffing aligns with needs.
