Summary:

POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for addressing staff competency and implementing effective, unit specific staff education strategies. Responsible for the evaluation of unit specific educational needs and delivery of education to develop and enhance professional performance and skills within the specialty area. Plans, directs, coordinates and evaluates all overall clinical education and administrative activities; including fiscal, material and human resource management. Participates in the development and implementation of hospital policies and procedures.

Maintains open communication with licensed and non-licensed pediatric as well as ancillary department staff that provide pediatric services to promote improvement in performance. This position requires a sound knowledge of nursing practice and exceptional leadership abilities.

POSITION EDUCATION/ QUALIFICATIONS:

• Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing.

• Bachelor of Science degree in nursing (BSN) is required (must be obtained within three (3) years of hire), MSN is preferred.

• Registered Nurse (RN) Licensure in the state of Texas required.

• Minimum of 3 years clinical nursing experience required; hospital experience preferred.

• One year of formal teaching experience or nursing professional development preferred.

• Certification in nursing specialty preferred

• Current BLS

• PALS and ACLS Certification within 12 months of hire date

• Must become BLS, PALS, and ACLS Instructor (Sub-specialties may require additional instructor courses)

• Organizational skills are necessary

• Good written and verbal communication skills required

• Ability to read, write, and speak English

• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with all levels of nursing, administration, and physicians

JOB KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:

• Cognitive and technical knowledge and the ability to progressively manage professional health care education delivery across the continuum of care will be required. The ability to retrieve, communicate and present data and information both verbally and in writing is required; as is the ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken and written word. Must be flexible with work scheduling.

Involves discretion and independent action within prescribed limits. Thorough knowledge and understanding of clinical protocols, procedures, and standards within area of nursing expertise.

• Ability to provide operational guidance and leadership to technical staff in area of specialty.

• Knowledge of related accreditation and certification requirements.

• Ability to assess educational needs and design and develop responsible curricula.

• Working knowledge of the use of established clinical and preceptorship models in the development of clinical education programs.

• Technical leadership skills within area of expertise.

• Advanced nursing skills in area of specialty.

• Responsible for the day to day training of nurses in respective unit of responsibility

• Collaborates and assists Nursing Educators from other areas

• Educates patient care staff in the use of new equipment, supplies, and instruments; coordinates in-service training and workshops for appropriate staff.

• Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
