Job Summary

Under general supervision, performs intermediate work in the maintenance, fabrication, repair, and overhaul of various structures and equipment.

Responsibilities

Troubleshoots, diagnoses and resolves intermediate work, routine water or wastewater facility machinery, piping, and equipment problems. Inspects and identifies issues on equipment, components and structures; documents and reports issues associated with process equipment at electric, water and wastewater facilities. Completes predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance. Assists in the installation, dismantle, repair, and preventative maintenance of pumps, motors, and other equipment utilized in the operation of large scale water, sewer and/or electric utility plant facilities and field stations.

Operates or uses a variety of hand or power tools and makes parts and fixtures by cutting and shaping metals. Assists in painting tasks; performs maintenance on building structures and equipment maintenance, including HVAC system. May require the part‑time operation of some machinery and equipment using hoists, jacks, and ladders. May operate a forklift, powered vertical lifting equipment, confined space equipment, utility truck, crane, vacuum/jetter combination unit, water tanker, or other heavy equipment.

Works shift schedule and on-call and call-out duty as needed (including nights, weekends, and holidays). Completes other job duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the methods, practices, and tools used in mechanical maintenance and repair work. Knowledge of general occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to mechanical maintenance and repair work. Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs. Skill in the proper use and care of tools and equipment necessary to perform various mechanical repair tasks. Skill to satisfactorily perform at least one of the following trades including but not limited to, mechanics, pipe fitting, insulation installation, welding, machining, electrical maintenance, electronics or controls.

Skill in operating power tools and heavy equipment, dump trucks, and other public utilities water/wastewater system vehicles. Ability to complete detailed inspections of machinery and mechanical equipment and to detect flaws and defects of machinery while in operation. Ability to use/operate various types of maintenance equipment with unencumbered competence. Ability to perform manual excavations and back filling construction trenches and loading materials onto trucks.

Ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions in English. Ability to work in confined spaces and follow confined space entry procedures. Ability to work in environments that may include exposure to various solvents, chemicals, and materials. Ability to improve one’s personal skills, knowledge, and abilities in order to meet or adapt to changing conditions. Ability to work around the clock, day, or night.

Education & Experience Requirements

High School Diploma or GED or U.S. Equivalency report required and two (2) years’ experience in mechanical maintenance or repair work.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Requires a valid Texas Driver License or receipt of a valid Texas Driver’s License within 90 days of relocation to Texas and a safe driving record, as measured by company policy.

A Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License with is required within (2) years from the date of appointment.
