Job OverviewThe Office of Inspector General (OIG) is an independent law enforcement agency dedicated to maintaining the safety and security of the Texas juvenile justice system. OIG inspectors general investigate criminal allegations involving TJJD juveniles, employees, facilities, contractors, volunteers, or programs within the Texas juvenile justice system. They oversee criminal investigations, possess all the powers and duties granted to peace officers under the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, and provide security at gatehouses, controlling ingress and egress of all personnel and vehicles.
OIG also detects and intercepts contraband to prevent its introduction into secure facilities operated by the TJJD. The OIG operates a 24‑hour Incident Reporting Center (IRC) that serves as the reporting and clearinghouse for the Texas juvenile justice system.
- Oversee and conduct criminal and administrative investigations regarding allegations of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and related misconduct, including interviewing witnesses, collecting and evaluating evidence, and preparing detailed reports for legal and administrative action.
- Obtain, execute warrants, assist other law enforcement agencies, conduct undercover investigations, and perform arrests and facility security duties, including escapee pursuit.
- Document and evaluate evidence, prepare comprehensive reports of investigations, and submit criminal cases for prosecution and administrative reports of abuse, neglect, and exploitation to agency leadership for discipline.
- Maintain records of cases, evidence, contraband, and property in compliance with applicable laws and retention policies.
- Conduct routine, random, or specifically requested searches and inspections of facility premises, persons, and vehicles entering or on facility premises.
- Coordinate with departmental staff to meet objectives, share information on investigative activities, identify operational concerns and trends, and recommend improvements.
- Collect and analyze reports of serious injury, escape, youth‑on‑youth assaults, and attempted suicide; issue reports regarding non‑compliance with related state laws and agency rules.
- Provide training to others and, if assigned, assist with canine partners to detect, intercept, and investigate contraband in secure and non‑secure areas of agency‑operated and contracted facilities.
- Perform related work as assigned, meet attendance and leave policies, and be available for extensive statewide travel with short notice.
