Position Overview
We are looking for Carpenters & Handy People! Join a fast‑growing company building small homes across New England to help ease the housing crisis.
Ideal Existing Knowledge Base- Must be familiar with construction and renovation practices
- Ideally familiar with building code and general building requirements
- Ideally familiar with building planning documentation including blueprints
- Ideally familiar with construction schedules
- Ideally come from a construction background (2‑5 years experience in Construction or construction related fields)
- Must have a valid class C driver’s license
- Must have a willingness to learn and unlearn all aspects of residential construction
- Forming of ICF foundations
- Pooring of concrete into ICF foundations
- Setting of modular houses, including ladder work and tethered roofing work
- Framing of on‑site components (breezeways, decks, etc.)
- Air‑sealing and insulating of entire building envelope (including spray foam, blown‑in cellulose, rockwool batts, acoustic caulking, taping and rigid foam board)
- Installation of drywall including mudding and taping
- Installation of flooring (hardwood, tile, LVT and LVP)
- Installation of interior and exterior wood trim work
- Installation of cabinets and hardware
- Installation of ducting for dryers, bathroom vents and ERV’s
- Installation of siding (wood, vinyl, or composite)
- Installation of decking
- Installation of stucco on foundation walls
We work year‑round including in cold and warm weather and carpenters are expected to be prepared accordingly. Carpenters must be extremely organized, humble about their construction knowledge, and motivated to continue learning based on building science and empirical best practices. Carpenters are incentivized for moving projects efficiently through Backyard ADUs construction phase.
Hours- 40 hours of work time during construction hours (6:30 am ‑ 6:30 pm). Work is project‑based and some weeks all of the 40 hours will be spent on site, while other weeks some hours could be spent commuting to remote job sites or picking up materials for job sites.
- 1 hour of continuing education every week expected (sometimes provided by Backyard ADUs). Total of 40 hours of continuing education required per year. Backyard ADUs will pay for approved continuing education.
- Some self‑driven continuing education expected outside of dedicated project work hours.
Must live in their region (specify if willing to travel). Work will occur at client sites with a base at the Backyard ADUs construction storage facility.
Pay- Base salary: $60,000 ‑ $82,000 depending on experience.
- Incentive pay: up to an additional $12,000 (see below). Incentive pay is based on how close to the original budgeted time and cost a project comes. For our typical project, a maximum of approximately $1,000 is available as a bonus for each carpenter when the project finishes. Our carpenters work on approximately 12 units per calendar year.
