Lab Technician – Earth and Oceanographic Science
Bowdoin College is seeking a Lab Technician to join the Jones Lab in the Department of Earth and Oceanographic Science.
Responsibilities- Assist with field sampling of coastal Maine rivers, including sediment transport measurements, geomorphic surveying, and hydrologic measurements.
- Utilize QGIS to measure geomorphic features of rivers.
- Maintain and organize field equipment (GPS receivers, survey equipment, hydroacoustic instruments).
- Use R to analyze geomorphic and hydrologic data.
- Maintain well‑organized data and detailed metadata.
- Participate in the preparation of manuscripts for publication, including literature review, analysis and graphing of data, and summarizing methods and results in text.
- Hourly rate: $26.35 per hour.

- Bachelor’s degree in earth and oceanographic science or related field (e.g., geology).
- Valid driver’s license and ability to meet the College’s Motor Vehicle Use Policy.
- Fundamental ability to plan, conduct, and analyze experiments with semi‑independent supervision (training provided by PI).
- Working knowledge of QGIS and R.
- Ability to use hydrologic and geomorphic field equipment.
- Strong understanding of conducting remote analyses of rivers.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including proactive communication.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general computer literacy.
- Ability to safely lift and carry up to 50 pounds for short distances.
- Course‑based experience in earth and oceanographic science or related field.
- Full‑time, one‑year appointment (40 hours per week for 52 weeks per year).
- Regular work schedule:
Monday through Friday, flexible hours between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., with occasional weekends. No overtime anticipated.
