Coordinate medical support for pupils with health needs, ensuring safe care, and effective liaison with families and professionals

Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage the school medical room, overseeing support for pupils with medical conditions during the school day
  • Coordinate and implement healthcare plans, ensuring pupils’ medical needs are safely and consistently met in school
  • Provide first aid and mental health first aid when required, responding calmly and effectively to medical incidents
  • Administer medication in line with school procedures, professional guidance and parental consent
  • Maintain accurate, confidential medical records in accordance with data protection requirements
  • Ensure medical supplies and medication are safely stored, monitored and kept in date
  • Liaise with parents, carers, staff and external health professionals to support pupils with ongoing or emerging medical needs
  • Coordinate immunisation sessions and support medical arrangements for school trips and activities
  • Work closely with pastoral staff, Heads of Year and safeguarding teams, sharing relevant information appropriately
  • Respond promptly to safeguarding concerns in line with school policies and procedures
  • Monitor, record and report accidents and health trends, including RIDDOR reporting where required
  • Contribute to health promotion and wellbeing initiatives across the wider school community
  • Undertake relevant training and ongoing professional development to maintain high standards of practice
  • Strong understanding of child health, wellbeing and safeguarding in a school setting
  • First aid experience and the ability to respond calmly and effectively to medical incidents
  • Experience of supporting pupils with medical conditions and implementing healthcare plans
  • Confidence administering medication in line with school procedures and parental consent
  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
  • Ability to maintain accurate, confidential medical records in line with data protection requirements
  • Clear, professional communication skills when working with pupils, parents, colleagues and external professionals
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and exercise sound judgement when responding to incidents
  • Strong awareness of health and safety responsibilities and duty of care
  • Commitment to equality, safeguarding and professional standards
  • First Aid at Work qualification
  • Youth Mental Health First Aid training
  • Training or experience in the administration of medication in schools
  • Experience of working in a secondary school or similar educational setting
  • Knowledge of RIDDOR reporting and accident monitoring
  • Experience of liaising with NHS services or other external health agencies
  • Understanding of child development and supporting pupils with additional or special educational needs
  • Confidence using ICT systems, including Microsoft Office and school management systems
  • Willingness to undertake further training and professional development
