Blind/Visually Impaired Mobility Trainer
Location:
Multiple school sites within the City of Buffalo (Buffalo Public Schools, charter schools, and non-public schools) Pay rate: $65 per hour
Position Summary:
The Blind/Visually Impaired Mobility Trainer will provide IEP-mandated orientation and mobility services to students with visual impairments, helping them develop the skills to travel safely and independently in school and community environments. This role involves serving approximately 20 students across multiple sites and collaborating closely with educators, families, and service providers to support individual student goals.
- Provide direct O&M instruction to students as outlined in IEPs or 504 plans.
- Travel between assigned school sites to deliver services.
- Complete and maintain all required documentation, including IEPs, Student Intervention Records (SIR), progress monitoring, and annual progress summaries, via the district’s Frontline (IEP Direct) system.
- Track and report attendance and progress in line with district requirements.
- Participate in Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings and evaluations.
- Ensure compliance with NYSED Part 200 Regulations and district data-sharing guidelines.
- Collaborate with teachers, families, and other professionals to facilitate student success.
- Services provided across up to 15 Buffalo schools.
- On-site services during the school year and extended year (summer program, if mandated).
- Typical hours:
Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 3:30 PM (flexible scheduling to meet IEP needs). - Occasional after-school hours for evaluations or meetings.
- Travel between schools required; travel costs included in hourly/session rate.
- $65/hour (covers instruction, travel, paperwork, consultation, and supervision).
- Session-based billing: 30, 45, or 60 minutes, as mandated by IEP.
- Evaluations: $120 each (includes report preparation).No additional charges for travel, cancellations, or paperwork per contract terms.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility or related field.
- ACVREP Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) or equivalent NYSED credential.
- Experience working with children who are blind or visually impaired, preferably in a school setting.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to travel between school sites.
