Responsibilities
  • This position reports to the VP of Engineering, and supports the activities of Engineering.
  • This position is based out of Williamsville, NY. Assigned seasonal and winter activities may take place on vessels in any Great Lakes or St. Lawrence Seaway port.
  • This position is unique in the company and is assigned to provide vessel stability and structure technical assistance as well as conduct vessel surveys. The duties include assisting the VP & AVP’s of Engineering, working closely with the Marine Superintendents/Vessel Managers and vessel officers as well as overseeing naval architecture and design firms, Classification societies, and vendors.
  • Maintain the fleet’s hull structural condition assessment tracking sheets, arrange vessel UT readings and advise VP of Engineering on significant steel renewals needs for the fleet’s 20-year capital reinvestment plan.
  • Maintain the fleet’s hull structure condition tracking and renewals history and forecasting.
  • Review fleet stability and load management for unusual load cases and tipping plans.
  • Lead R&D projects to improve fleet efficiency, repair effectiveness, major modifications, and efficiency improvements. Oversee technical projects with Herbert-ABS, Bay Engineering, NETSCO (Conversions, mods, safety & regulatory initiatives, support commercial projects – exploring new business opportunities loading/unloading at new docks & ports, etc).
  • Address technical & structural discussions with ABS & USCG with third-party design firm support as needed.
  • Assist AVP with writing and issuing RFQs (requests for quote) on major steel projects fleetwide. Track RFQs and compare prices & lead times.
  • Assist vessel superintendents as needed with special projects, challenging in-season repairs, and drydock prep. Assist in Root Cause Analyses of key breakdowns.
  • Assist the VP & AVP of Engineering with the fleet’s hull structure renewals and repairs needs. Provide technical guidance for structural repairs during the operating season, and manage planned renewals performed during the out-of-service winter maintenance period.
  • Maintain the fleet’s hull structure condition and thickness tracking program, analyze thickness readings and produce reports.
  • Support vessel stability and load management, provide technical guidance for cargo loading/unloading and develop optimization plans.
  • Support efforts to improve current and innovative repair and renewal techniques for increased effectiveness, reduced project duration, and extended project useful life.
  • Arrange and manage third-party design work, coordinate with firms such as Naval Architecture, software companies, and ABS to review technical drawings and details related to vessel improvement projects.
  • Lead company’s R&D efforts and special projects to improve fleet reliability, efficiency, and explore fleet advancement.
  • Assist with review and evaluation of unload capabilities at unique loading & unloading docks, design load plans, and vessel modifications to accommodate new docks.
  • Assist with “winter work” planning across the 3 fleets, draft RFQs to shipyards and compare quotes.
  • Education / Training / Experience
    • Must possess a degree in Naval Architecture.
    • Five to ten years of experience at a shipyard or other marine-related organization, overseeing ship construction, repair, operations or maintenance projects is preferred.
    • Must have demonstrated detail-oriented organizational and technical skills.
    • Ability to read and understand technical drawings & specifications.
    • Preferred to have experience designing ship structure for new vessels and/or existing vessel retrofit projects for structure or machinery.
    • Preferred to have Great Lakes sailing or maritime/shipyard experience.
    • Preferred to have a broad knowledge of Great Lakes vessel structural arrangements and mechanical equipment maintenance and repair.
    • 3-5 years of project management experience is preferred.
