Job SummaryUnder the provisions of the Labor Agreement and Local Supplementary Agreements including all DTE and GM Safety Rules and Regulations, Operating Engineers will generally be responsible for operating and performing routine maintenance and repair on all equipment within the assigned areas of responsibility. Operating Engineers will operate and maintain medium voltage substations, primary switchyard, transformers and related equipment, steam boilers and associated equipment, including chillers, compressors, cooling towers, pumps, wastewater treatment process equipment, loading and unloading tanker trucks, fans and perform all other work related to their trade as directed by the Plant Manager (PM) or their designee.
KeyAccountabilities
- Safe operation and routine maintenance on all utilities production equipment and related systems, including medium voltage substations, primary substation, transformers, steam boilers, chillers, compressors, cooling towers, water treatment equipment and other support systems and ancillary equipment.
- Operating all equipment to meet the day-to-day production demands of the GM manufacturing facility, including the production of steam, chilled water, river water pumping station, wastewater treatment, loading and unloading tanker trucks, emergency generator, electrical distribution systems and compressed air at the quantities and specifications required by the manufacturing facility.
- Monitoring operating parameters and recording operating data, including production rates, fuel usage, electrical usage, pressures, temperatures, vibration indications, alarms and other pertinent information related to the safe operation of the equipment.
- Prompt notification to the Plant Manager or their designee of any unusual, abnormal, or potentially unsafe operating conditions and taking action to mitigate any potentially unsafe condition.
- Operation and routine maintenance associated with water treatment equipment for boilers, cooling towers and cold water closed loops, including routine monitoring of water quality, addition of water treatment chemicals, and routine maintenance of water treatment equipment such as changing filters and adding salt to softeners.
- The de-energization (lock-out/tag-out) of all equipment within the powerhouse required to safely perform maintenance on such equipment.
- Perform routine (planned maintenance) on all equipment, including predictive, preventive, and minor corrective maintenance, and assist contractors with work beyond the capability of the Operating Engineer.
- Recording and documenting all maintenance activities performed on utility production equipment using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
- Maintain an adequate supply of spare parts such as belts, hoses, seals, lubricants, sensing devices, gauges, etc. within a designated storage area.
- Perform troubleshooting and correction of problems related to the monitoring, control, and operation of all utility equipment.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work area, ensuring it is left unobstructed and in a safe condition after completion of job duties.
- Participate in continuous improvement efforts to achieve targeted goals and metrics for efficient facility operation.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum two years’ experience in plant operations.
- Ability to read and understand one-line drawings for electrical and mechanical systems.
- Electrical troubleshooting on medium voltage and low voltage systems.
- Draw a motor control start-stop diagram.
- Two years’ experience operating centralized chilled water systems.
- A First-Class Stationary Engineer license is highly preferred.
- Shift work required; perform both operational and routine maintenance of facility equipment.
- Frequently stand, walk, sit, climb, or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
- Use hands to finger, handle or feel, and constantly reach with hands and arms.
- Occasionally lift up to 100 pounds; routinely lift up to 50 pounds.
