About WNY PRISM

The Western New York Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (WNY PRISM) is one of eight regional partnerships within New York State created to address the threat of invasive species and to prevent or minimize the harm they cause to the environment, economy, and human health. The program works to improve, restore, and protect local aquatic and terrestrial resources through effective invasive species management, public engagement and outreach across an 8-county region.

WNY PRISM is a sponsored program of the Research Foundation for SUNY Buffalo State University and is hosted by the Great Lakes Center. Funding is provided by the Environmental Protection Fund through a contract with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Position Description

The Education and Outreach Assistant will work closely with WNY PRISM staff and partners to implement and expand education, outreach, and community science programs. Reporting to the Community Science and Engagement Program Manager, the role includes assisting with events, workshops, trainings, managing social media accounts, capturing photo and video content, preparing e-newsletters, maintaining detailed records, coordinating the volunteer program, developing educational materials and website content, and communicating with volunteers, partners, and the public.

The candidate will also assist with invasive species surveys, removal, and habitat restoration projects as needed.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Assist with planning and coordination of WNY PRISM events.
  • Represent WNY PRISM at regional tabling and outreach events.
  • Develop and post content for social media accounts and report on performance metrics.
  • Capture photo and video content of events and activities and organize files.
  • Write bi-weekly e-News and assist with the development of the Fall Newsletter.
  • Maintain detailed records for all educational, outreach, and volunteer events.
  • Assist with the volunteer program and coordination efforts.
  • Develop educational materials and website content.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Assist with invasive species surveys and mapping using iMapInvasives.
  • Support the Invasive Species Management Crew and partners with removal and restoration efforts.
  • Manage office operations, including answering phone and email inquiries, and maintaining communication records.
Qualifications
  • Undergraduate Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Education, Natural Resources or a similar field preferred.
  • At least 1 year of related professional experience.
  • Knowledge of invasive species, their ecology, and management practices.
  • A strong interest in environmental education and invasive species management.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and writing skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and social media platforms (Facebook and Instagram).
  • Good time management and organizational skills with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Comfortable speaking in front of a variety of audiences.
Travel Requirements

Use of a personal vehicle is required. Approved work-related travel will be reimbursed at a rate of $0.70 per mile.

Job Details

This is a full-time, temporary position (40 hours per week at $21.00/hour) for a period of 21 weeks, from May 4, 2026 to September 25, 2026. The work schedule is Tuesday through Saturday, with Sunday and Monday off. Some evening hours may be required.
