Security Officer ($18.50/hr + DOE) – Canisius University – Buffalo, NY Job Description
This position is in a public environment at Canisius University and its surrounding areas, with a traffic mix of employees, visitors, and students. The Security Officer patrols campus and provides safety, security, and assistance to students, staff, and guests.
Responsibilities- Patrol campus environs by foot and/or vehicle to observe and report suspicious or criminal activity.
- Respond to emergencies, take appropriate action, and document all incidents.
- Issue tickets for parking and moving violations.
- Make payroll runs and provide general courier service.
- Provide friendly, courteous, and respectful service to the Canisius University community.
- Attend various training seminars and retain the information.
- Maintain confidentiality of information (including student and employee personal data) during and after employment. Report any confidentiality questions to a supervisor; violations may result in disciplinary action up to termination.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
- 90% – Patrol campus by foot and/or vehicle; respond to emergencies, take action, and accurately document incidents.
- 10% – Issue tickets, conduct payroll runs, and provide general courier service.
- High School diploma required or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Associate degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years related experience.
- Valid New York State driver’s license that satisfies university and insurance requirements; able to operate a motor vehicle in Canada.
- Current New York State Security Guard Registration required.
- First Aid and CPR certification required.
- Emergency Medical Technician certification preferred.
- Must be able to speak, understand, read, and write English.
- Read and comprehend various forms, documentation, and files.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication; problem‑solving and intervention skills.
- Proficiency in handling office equipment (keyboard, calculator, computer, copier, fax).
- Receive telephone and radio calls, respond to inquiries, and communicate by telephone.
- Adhere to all safety guidelines and regulations set by the university.
- Work flexible shifts, evenings, and weekends.
- Reliable, dependable; make decisions in the moment with little supervision.
- Effective customer‑service skills.
- Working knowledge of Windows programs and applications.
- Perform all essential job functions for a minimum eight‑hour shift without significant risk of serious injury.
- Drive a personal or university vehicle for university business regularly.
Physical Requirements
- Weather:
Indoor/Outdoor; frequent exposure to cold and hot conditions. - Noise level:
Moderate to Loud. - Must be able to stand, walk, climb, push, pull, use hands and arms, stoop, kneel, and crouch constantly.
- Lift and move up to 50 lbs.

- Interpersonal Skills – Solve conflict; maintain confidentiality; listen without interrupting; control emotions; remain open to other ideas.
