Position: Laborer ll (Year-Round Seasonal)
Job Description:Laborer II
An incumbent in this class performs a wide variety of unskilled, independent laboring work. Duties may involve assisting or acting as a helper to skilled craft workers (journeymen) in maintenance, repair, and service activities. This position differs from Laborer I in that it requires a working knowledge of basic methods and techniques used in maintenance and repair of buildings, equipment, and grounds.
Work may be performed independently under immediate supervision. A Laborer II has no supervisory responsibilities.
Incumbents are expected to perform any unskilled tasks deemed necessary by departments/divisions/agencies in city service, including:
Acting as an assistant to skilled craft workers such as carpenters, masons, electricians, painters, bricklayers, plasterers, glaziers, and general mechanics.Serving as a general handyman, performing duties like repairing windows, doors, floors, walls, cleaning, operating, lubricating, and repairing boilers, pumps, heaters, pipelines, motors, valves, traps, and metering equipment.Mixing plaster and concrete, repairing cranes, air compressors, air hoists, and assisting in laying bricks, plastering walls, finishing concrete, and painting.Assisting in the making and hanging of street signs and erecting posts, maintaining traffic signals, and servicing automotive equipment.Supporting mechanics in repairing trucks, automobiles, and other automotive equipment with tasks like charging batteries, fixing flat tires, and replacing worn parts.Performing custodial work, operating light motorized equipment, and assisting in material handling and stockroom management.Performing general labor, including trash removal, street cleaning, snow removal, and ground maintenance activities.Assisting in the care and handling of animals at the Animal Shelter and disposing of dead animals.Excavating, back filling, and performing repairs on city streets, curbs, and sidewalks.Participating in sewage treatment plant duties, landscaping, and recreational equipment maintenance.Qualifications include one year of experience in general physical work in maintenance, repair, or tending of buildings, grounds, and equipment, or assisting a skilled craft worker.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a current NYS Driver's License may be required for certain departments. The candidate should have working knowledge of trade practices, tools, safety precautions, automotive shop methods, and mechanical aptitude. The ability to follow instructions, physical endurance, strength, agility, and good coordination are essential.
