Senior Software Engineer – API Services, Core Banking

Join M&T Bank's API Services organization as a Senior Software Engineer supporting Core Banking APIs, where you'll help develop and modernize the backend services that connect applications across the Bank to critical downstream systems. API Services serves as a central integration layer, enabling digital, business banking, retail, and commercial applications to securely access capabilities such as account, transaction, and statement information.

In this role, you'll design, develop, and support Java-based APIs and backend services while contributing to cloud modernization and the continued evolution of the Bank's enterprise API ecosystem. You'll join a collaborative engineering environment where team members develop deep expertise in specific services while gaining exposure across multiple products and application areas. Work independently and within the boundaries of the approved Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) to process, design, and develop applications to solve business needs and minimize risks to the Bank by writing clean and resilient code. Design, develop, enhance, and support Java-based backend applications, APIs, and services supporting the Bank's enterprise API ecosystem. Build and support API-driven solutions and integrations that enable communication between internal and external banking applications and downstream systems.

Develop new API capabilities and enhance existing services to support evolving business and technology needs. Regularly review pull requests, provide feedback, and execute on the change management of the request. Author organized, clean, efficient, and secure source code at an advanced level in a minimum of one programming language and apply knowledge of appropriate data structures and algorithms to solve business problems.

Utilize source code management tools to manage and deploy code/applications, ensure compliance with SDLC policies, and support merge conflict resolution. Independently analyze and critique technical and business requirements to ensure completeness, accuracy, and feasibility. Troubleshoot and support backend applications, services, APIs, and related platform issues across development and production environments. Collaborate, document, and communicate technical implementation details clearly and concisely with engineers, technical partners, and dependent teams.

Conduct code reviews, providing constructive feedback on code quality and improvements to team members. Contribute to conversations with business and technical stakeholders regarding application architecture and technology solutions. Contribute to modernization efforts, including the migration and evolution of existing services toward cloud-based technologies. Support highly available, enterprise-scale applications and services. Contribute to continuous improvement and innovation across the engineering organization, including the use of emerging and AI-assisted development technologies.

Understand and adhere to the Company's risk and regulatory standards, policies, and controls in accordance with the Company's Risk Appetite. Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management. Promote an environment that supports a culture of belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand. Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.

Associate's degree and a minimum of 5 years' systems analysis and/or application development work experience or Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 3 years' systems analysis and/or application development work experience. In lieu of degree, a combined minimum of 7 years' education and/or relevant work experience, including a minimum of 3 years' systems analysis and/or application development work experience. Advanced proficiency in a minimum of one relevant programming language.
