Job Summary

The Speech Language Pathologist enhances resident intentional communication by interpreting evaluations and test results; identifying speech, language, voice, and swallowing disorders; determining speech therapy treatment plans in consultation with physicians or by prescription; providing counseling and guidance; observing resident progress.

Essential Job Functions

Collaborate in a long‑term care rehab environment, delivering services often initiated in acute medical care. As a Speech Pathologist in this setting, engage as a vital part of interdisciplinary teams overseeing direct resident management. Actively listen, invest time in understanding perspectives, ask pertinent questions, and avoid disruptive interruptions.

The SLP works with a variety of residents, including:

  • Stroke
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Cancer of throat, mouth, larynx
  • Congenital Palsy (e.g., cerebral palsy)
  • Degenerative neuromuscular disease (e.g., Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis)
  • Dementia

Engage in vibrant long‑term care rehab, bridging the gap from acute medical care to unleash resident potential. Collaborate with an array of residents, from stroke and traumatic brain injury to cerebral palsy and degenerative neuromuscular diseases.

• Assess speech therapy resident conditions, identifying disorders and crafting personalized treatment plans.

• Elevate resident experiences by utilizing cutting‑edge tools like audio‑visual equipment and electronic voice machines.

• Observe and adapt, ensuring therapy effectiveness and recommending adjustments as needed.

• Maintain top‑notch productivity standards, harmonizing speech therapy with physical therapy, occupational therapy, and nursing teams.

• Complete discharge planning, ensuring a seamless transition with home exercise programs and assistive equipment recommendations.

• Document resident care services with precision, contributing to charting in resident and department records.

• Set program goals, assess equipment needs, and actively participate in budget planning for the community.

• Safeguard healthcare organization value through confidentiality practices and cautioning against potential breaches.

• Uphold professional standards, healthcare policies, and ASHA Standards of Care, contributing to the protection of the healthcare community.

• Develop speech therapy and ancillary staff through informative and engaging in‑service training programs.

• Keep speech therapy equipment in optimal condition, troubleshooting, maintaining supplies, and promptly addressing breakdowns.

• Stay at the forefront of your field, attending workshops, reviewing publications, and fostering professional networks.

• Contribute to the success of speech therapy and the healthcare organization by embracing diverse requests and aiding colleagues in achieving job results.
