Financial Institutions, Casinos & Gaming, Retirement Plans, and Not-For-Profits. Credit unions are the core of the client base, and the tax group also serves individuals, small businesses, nonprofits, trusts, and estates.
The firm is hiring a Tax Director to lead tax work out of its Burbank office. The Burbank office is a team of 12 across tax and administration. The tax team includes a Tax Partner, a Manager, two Seniors, and three Staff, and it works alongside two tax associates in the Philippines and a team in Las Vegas. You will be the senior technical and operational lead beneath the Tax Partner, with real ownership of the work and the people.
Responsibilities- Oversee preparation and review of Form 1040 individual returns, small business returns, Form 990 nonprofit returns, and trust and estate returns
- Manage workflow, staffing, and deadlines across the Burbank team and the Philippines associates, especially through busy season
- Review complex returns and serve as the senior technical resource for tax research and planning questions
- Coach and develop the Manager, Seniors, and Staff, and give clear, timely feedback
- Support client relationships, including the firm's credit union clients, and handle client questions and IRS or state notices as they arise
- Work with the Tax Partner on practice priorities, client retention, and growth of the tax group
- Active CPA license
- Extensive public accounting tax experience, including supervising and reviewing the work of others
- Strong background in individual (1040), small business, nonprofit (990), and trust and estate taxation
- Multistate (SALT) and international tax experience is not needed. Both are a very small part of the work.
- A stable work history and a collaborative, hands-on leadership style that fits a close-knit team
- Office hours are 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM
- Busy season runs about 10 hours of overtime per week, plus one weekend day
- Salary based on experience
- Bonuses and raises are merit-based and tied to individual performance
- Medical through Anthem, with HMO and PPO options. The firm pays 65% of the employee premium and 15% for dependents.
- Dental: the firm pays 50% of the PPO plan and 100% of the HMO plan
- Life insurance equal to 1x salary
- 401(k) with an employer match of up to 4%
- Thanksgiving off, with a Wednesday firm event (game show) that wraps by noon
