Position: POWER PLANT OPERATOR TRAINEE

Tentative examination dates for this recruitment:

Week of 02/09/2026 - Written examination

Dates may change due to unforeseen circumstances. Candidates who pass each phase of the recruitment process will be notified of the official examination dates.

Under supervision, to learn the operation of a turbo-electric generating plant, the maintenance of related machinery and equipment, the operation and maintenance of control systems, and do related work as required.

To learn various areas of power plant operation and maintenance, including, but not limited to: boilers, turbines, pumps and related equipment; power plant control and instrument systems and related equipment; chemical tests and appropriate corrections on plant systems; reports abnormal conditions and takes appropriate corrective action.

Employment Standards:

Ability to learn the operation of power plant equipment; willingly work on a rotating shift or relief crew; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and fellow employees and the public.

Special Conditions & Requirements:

Positions allocated to this classification are in a training capacity for Power Plant Operator. Maximum time for completion of the training program is 24 months. Trainees may be terminated from employment at any time during the training period. An extension of the 24-month training period may be considered when all Power Plant Operator positions are filled. Successful completion of the training program will qualify an individual to take the examination for Power Plant Operator.

Continued employment is not guaranteed if there are no vacant positions after one extension of the 24 month training period.

Education/Training:

Graduation from high school or equivalent at time of appointment.

A valid California Class “C” driver’s license or equivalent may be required at time of appointment.
