Job DescriptionCytologists evaluate cellular samples for the presence of infectious processes, precancerous changes and invasive cancer, reporting out routine gynecologic samples, while rendering preliminary diagnoses on potentially abnormal gynecologic samples, all non-gynecologic samples and all fine needle aspirations. Cytologists assist with processing fine needle aspiration specimens for cytologic evaluation. They also assist with teaching students, residents, and fellows that rotate into the department of Cytopathology.
EducationA Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, plus 12 months of training in a CAAHEP accredited school of cytotechnology, or equivalency qualification as specified by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments law.
CertificationCytologist board certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathology, CT(ASCP), or eligible.
